Why Delta Airlines SUCKS

I could have titled this post "The Worst Travel Experience I Have Ever Had" or "Delta Airlines is the WORST airlines company in the World", but that was just too wordy.  Plus, it makes me feel better to yell to the world that Delta Airlines SUCKS!  But, I am getting ahead of myself.

Let's go back to the beginning...

PART 1 (The Arrival):  Little Man had his very first out-of-state lacrosse tournament last week in Traverse City, Michigan. The boys have been so excited all summer to play in the Cherry Bomb Lacrosse Tournament.  We had decided to make this trip our family vacation and go up a few days early to explore the area.  We were supposed to fly out Wednesday night (DFW to Detroit, then Detroit to Traverse City) and get to Traverse City, Michigan about 6:30 pm.

As we approached Detroit, the Captain told us that "due to weather" we would have to circle the airport for about 30 minutes before we could land. Once we were on the ground, we could tell that it had been raining and were happy to find that our connecting flight had been pushed back 45 minutes and that we hadn't missed the second leg of our flight.  Then they pushed it back another 30 minutes, then an hour, then they canceled the flight.  When we went to the desk to see what could be done, they said they could get us on the next "available" flight - which was SATURDAY.

So, we were left with no choice but to rent a car (which cost $650) and drive 4 hours from Detroit to Traverse City.  We arrived at 3:30 am.  Oh, and our luggage? Well, that couldn't be removed from the plane so we had to go the Traverse City airport on Thursday morning to retrieve it.  We had planned to go to Mackinaw Island on Thursday - our only free day before the tournament - but since we had to go to the airport to get our luggage, that didn't happen.


Part 2 (The Return):  Did I mention that because we had to rent a car and drive from Detroit to Traverse City, we had to drive it BACK to Detroit.  They wouldn't let us return the car to Traverse City, so we had to drive back another 4 hours to Detroit and then fly back to DFW.   Not only do I hate Delta Airlines, I also now hate National Car Rental and their stupid rules.

We got to the Detroit Airport to fly home and - oh wait - you know it couldn't be that easy!  We boarded the plane and sat and sat and sat. Then the Captain came on and said there are "problems with the brakes" and "everyone has to get off the plane and we will reboard in an hour".

The only bright spot in this travesty was that the ticket agent back in Detroit had been nice enough to rebook us on First Class as an attempted apology for Delta screwing over my whole vacation. So when we finally did take off I was looking forward to a glass of wine and a snack. But hey, guess what, in First Class on Delta there are no free drinks or snacks. We got the same crappy peanuts and pretzels the people in Coach got. The only thing extra we were offered was Reese's Peanut Butter Cup or Twix Candy Bars in the mix. Are you kidding me!?

So hey, Delta, if you are smart enough to have an agency who "listens" for you online and this post actually gets read by someone who works for you, let me just tell you that the $200 voucher you offered me for my troubles doesn't BEGIN to pay for the pain and suffering and emotional distress you caused me. Not to mention the $650 car rental fee I incurred.   This is the first time I have ever flown Delta and it will definitely be the last.

In case you missed my point, DELTA AIRLINES STINKS!


  1. You should write a letter to Delta and demand a refund for your rental car. That is totally unacceptable. It's also unacceptable that you couldn't return the rental car in Traverse City. You should write a letter to National as well. They held you hostage! Fly American, I'm usually through 4 drinks in the first hour when we get first!
