Reinvent Yourself with a Mommy Makeover

Today's post is brought to you by The Women's Center for Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery:

Are you counting the days until school starts? While I enjoy the laid-back rhythm of summer, I am always gleeful about the new school year and the return to a more scheduled way of life. A new school year always signified a new beginning to me. It was the opportunity to reinvent yourself and show people how you’d “changed” over the summer: gotten cooler, maybe gotten taller or developed a new style…

Even though I have been out of school for decades and my son is not a ‘baby’ anymore, the need to keep improving and stay current has not diminished. We all know that the need for peer approval does not end with high school graduation!  As we approach the transition from summer to fall, it has me thinking about my own desire for transformation.

As women, we transform our bodies through pregnancy and it’s not always so easy to morph back into that pre-baby shape! Diet and exercise are two essential components to not only transform, but also maintain your physical appearance. But what can you do when it seems like all the crunches in the world can’t help you get rid of that “baby weight” you’ve been carrying for the past several… or even 15 or 20 years? Dr. Diane Gibby is a renowned Dallas plastic surgeon and one of her most sought-after procedures is the “Mommy Makeover”.

A “Mommy Makeover” is a combination of procedures that restore a woman's body to its natural, pre-pregnancy state. The goal is to bring back to form what was stretched-out during pregnancy and time-spent breastfeeding. For many women, this may start with an abdominoplasty, which tightens the excess skin of the lower abdomen, leaving a scar that can be hidden low in the bikini line. Often, many of the stretch marks of the abdomen can be removed with this procedure. The muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened to improve the "tone" of the abdomen. Liposuction is often performed to additionally contour the abdomen.

The changes in a woman's breasts are the next area to be addressed, many times during the same operative procedure as abdominal contouring. Breast implants can be used to replace the volume of the breasts, and a breast lift might be recommended to tighten the skin of the breasts to a more natural, youthful position. A Mommy Makeover may be performed in a single operation or in staged procedures, depending on your general health the complexity of the procedure.

The physical alterations from pregnancy affect each woman differently and are often accompanied by an emotional component that adversely affects self-esteem and confidence. “The good news is that these changes can all be dramatically improved with new advances in surgical techniques, “ says Dr. Gibby.

“Specializing in body contouring has allowed me to not only garner surgical expertise specific to these procedures, but the ability to really listen and understand a woman's concerns during every phase of her life,” said Dr. Gibby. “This understanding is crucial so that the desired result is achieved."
