Pat Smith stars in Mrs. & Mr. Smith airing March 26th on OWN

Emmitt and Pat Smith on the red carpet of the NFL Honors in San Francisco (February 6, 2016)

The photo above accurately illustrates how most of the world views Pat Smith. As a beautiful piece of arm candy belonging to NFL legend and Dancing With The Stars champion, Emmitt Smith. But Pat Smith is so much more than just a pretty face and on March 26 at 9:00PM (CST) Oprah's OWN network will introduce her to the world in "Mrs. & Mr. Smith". The hour-long show will air as special and be treated like a pilot episode. The episode will follow Pat as she wrangles 5 kids, a superstar husband and, like every woman in America, struggles to not lose herself in the process. We'll learn about Pat's commitment to faith and philanthropy and see how she's making a difference in the world through her charities, Treasure You and Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities. If viewers tune in with strong numbers, additional episodes will be considered. You have to be pretty interesting to get Oprah's attention and behind that gorgeous smile is one helluva story.

Pat Smith was the first African American woman to win the title of Miss Virginia in 1993 and was named first runner-up (or first loser, as Pat calls it) in the 1994 Miss USA Pageant. She lost her mother to breast cancer while preparing for the Miss USA competition, which changed the trajectory of her life forever.  After Miss USA, Smith moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, determined to become the next Katie Couric (a fellow Virginian).

May 2016. Click to preorder your copy.
She nabbed roles in The Wayans Brothers Show, Beverly Hills 90210 and Sunset Beach. In 1995, she met and married comedian and actor Martin Lawrence and as she says, "...was living the dream: a mansion in Beverly Hills, driving a cute Jaguar, I had a closet full of designer shoes and outfits." And she was scared and miserable. Her marriage to Lawrence was tumultuous and one night she got up her courage, packed one suitcase, grabbed her daughter and fled for her life. She had no money, no credit of her own, no where to go and felt humiliated to ask for help. After all, she had "the perfect life."

Patricia Southall Smith comes from a long line of Southern women. You can bend a Belle, but we do not break easily. She found her way back to the church, got back on her feet and eventually met and married Emmitt Smith in 2000. Pat Smith is the Founder and CEO of Pat Smith Enterprises, Founder and CEO of “Treasure You” and the Co-Founder of Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities. Pat Smith believes that everyone deserves as second chance.

She has proven to be a dynamic author and storyteller, and will be releasing her first book, “Second Chances” in May of 2016. You can preorder your copy here. Her non-profit, “Treasure You”, inspires women to pursue their second chance in life despite circumstances or setbacks. Can you see why Oprah wanted to bring Pat Smith out of Emmitt's shadow and into the spotlight? Tune in to watch Mrs. & Mr. Smith on Saturday, March 26 at 9:00PM (CST) on the OWN network.
