Club Membership

My beautiful friend, Julie, turned 40 this week and I was invited to a birthday celebration lunch at Mi Cocina this week. No sign of Troy Aikman though.

One of Julie's friends gave her this bodacious boa and sparkling tiara to wear at her party

The whole party got me to thinking how when my Mother's friends turned 40 they went into a dark depression, disappeared into a smoke-filled haze and dulled themselves with gin and tonics for a week. Now, gals throw themselves huge parties to celebrate the fact the they are the big 4-0. Is this a sign that our youth-obsessed culture is perhaps becoming less obsessive and realizing that with age comes wisdom and that wisdom is power? Nah. But we are getting smarter about taking care of ourselves. 40 is the new 30.

I think your 20's are for figuring out yourself: Who am I? What do I want to be when I grow up? What kind of partner do I want to be with? Your 30's find you married, focusing on babies and career. Your 40's are for enjoying the path that you are on. According to Oprah, the 50's are the best. I'll have to wait and see. But I am happy to say that every age I have been was better than the year before.

Welcome to the club Julie.
