Twitter Titter: Mark Cuban Challenges Donald Trump

A post on Mashable earlier this week alerted me to this Twitter duel between billionaire basketball owner Mark Cuban and billionaire real estate tycoon Donald Trump.  The only thing bigger than their bank accounts is their egos and this war of words is just one of many battles these two have had.

DIFFA/Dallas 2013 Delivers (Again)

Note the working chandelier inside her wig. Shut the front door!

DIFFA/Dallas is North Texas’ standout organization for raising funds for preventative education and services for men, women & children affected by HIV/ AIDS.  Now in its 23rd year, this year’s fundraising event, titled House of DIFFA, took place on March 23rd at The Hilton Anatole ballroom.  Rachel Abrams at CultureMap said of the event, "Marie Antoinette-inspired fashions, dynamic drag divas, priceless live auction experiences, burlesque dancers — over-the-top doesn’t even begin to describe House of DIFFA, the fashion and awards show presented by Joule Dallas, benefiting North Texas HIV/AIDS charities."  AMEN!  There are two events in Dallas that should be on your bucket list - and this is one of them (the Mad Hatter's Tea at the Dallas Arboretum is the other) and here's why:

Reason number one is that at any event where gays are the focus and in the majority, the level of fashion (ie, bling) is going to be off-the-chart fantastic.  The hair, the make-up, the accessories, the frocks.... it's like an eye candy explosion!  Think I'm exaggerating? Look at the photos in this post... and this is just a small sampling of what was in the room. I was pleased to see that our local design scene was duly represented by fashionistas at the event: Prashe was seen on Allison Volk, Dawn Mellon and Vivian Lombari.  Bri Crum donned IZAVEL by Isabel Varela and Dawn Neufeld shimmered in Watters.  Creations by couture jeweler, SHONA, adorned Jayne Chobot Harring, Dawn Mellon and LeeAnne Locken and Lisa Petty was spotted in Gehati.

Fresh Faces of Fashion 2013

(left) Sherry Tilley & Yvonne Crum (top right) Marc and Katy Mattox (bottom right) Bri Crum, Jennifer Miller & Courtney Kerr

The 7th annual Fresh Faces of Fashion program all began several months ago when Modern Luxury magazine collected nominations for this year's roster. To be selected as a FFF, one has to be not only stylish on the outside, but be able to serve up a dossier of charitable works and contributions to the community at large. Every year, 12 lucky women are selected to represent the program and serve as stylish ambassadors to raise awareness and much needed funds to benefit the North Texas Suicide and Crisis Center.

This 2-tiered evening, co-chaired by Yvonne Crum and Martha Wyly Miller, kicked off at Stanley Korshak on Friday, March 22 with a runway show featuring fashions from Sachin + Babi and other various Korshak designers. Stomping the runway were this year's crop of "Fresh Faces" which included Nicole Barrett, Peyton Blackwell, Paige Hardison, Bailey Harrison, Bentley Hill, Jessica Jones, Cristina Lynch, Maddy McKinley, Priya Bhola Rathod, Rachel Riley, Melody Rogers and Nicole Stewart.

Oh So Tasty: The LOT

East Dallas can now claim Dallas' hippest dining destination - The LOT. According to their website, The LOT is a locally-influenced restaurant and neighborhood beer garden in the heart of East Dallas. Located off the Santa Fe Trail and a stone’s throw from White Rock Lake and the Arboretum. (They offer) fresh, locally sourced food and a wide selection of wine, cocktails and beers on tap, served in a relaxed casual atmosphere. Come as you are, and bring your friends — dogs and kids included.

Owner John McBride hosted a media luncheon a few weeks ago to show off the place and I was not disappointed. This is a fantastic new destination for families. As anyone with kids knows, It's next to impossible to enjoy a meal when you eat out with children under the age of 8. They whine until the food hits the table that they are starving and it's taking too long. And 2 minutes later, after they've consumed their meal, they are whining again that they are bored and ready to go home. Well, parents, this place is the answer to your prayers.  Not only do the kids have a play to run and play so you can enjoy that glass of wine and a real conversation, but the food is GOOD.

New Orleans Road Trip Adventure (Day Three)

Today's post marks the end of our Spring Break adventure to New Orleans. Day One shared how I screwed up our original plans to hit the beaches of Florida by booking a house the wrong week (oops!), I recounted our attempts to see the boys of Duck Dynasty and shared how we started our Big Easy adventure with oysters on the half-shell. Day Two featured beignets, albino alligators, hurricanes and hot tubs and more French Quarter fun. And now, my story continues...

Courtyard of The Court of Two Sisters

Day Three:  Our last day in New Orleans began at The Court of Two Sisters. Emma and Bertha Camors (real sisters) belonged to a proud, aristocratic Creole family; their “rabais,” or notions, outfitted many of New Orleans’ high society women in formal gowns, lace, and perfumes imported from Paris. With a larger courtyard than its neighbors, the residence lent itself to visitors, and the sisters’ shop received many. Marriage, reversals of fortune, widowhood--nothing could separate the two sisters. Indeed, as the Picayune was to report, the sisters died within two months of each other in the winter of 1944. They lie side by side at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, united in death as in life.

The Court of Two Sisters is still owned and operated by the original family and is world-famous for it's jazz brunch, held daily. In the center of the courtyard sits a 200 year-old Wisteria tree that only blooms for a couple of weeks each year. We were lucky enough to see the first of its blooms when we dined. We enjoyed a leisurely brunch that included at least three trips to the buffet for traditional cajun foods like Turtle Soup, Eggs Benedict, Jambalaya, Bananas Foster and Bread Pudding.  A wonderful jazz band provided delightful background music to our brunch conversation.  I could have sat there all day soaking up that wonderful atmosphere.

Find designer deals at Clothes Circuit

Designer duds at discount prices?
Yes, please!
I am a gal who has champagne tastes on a soda pop budget. I hardly ever pay retail and I am always looking for a bargain. Just call me a Recessionista.  So, it was inevitable that I would end up in consignment shops. You know what they say; one woman’s outfit from last season is another woman’s treasure! And that’s what consignment shopping is for me – a treasure hunt! One of my best finds ever was a Burberry blouse in their classic plaid print that I snatched off a mannequin at Clothes Circuit for $42. It originally retailed for $198.

Now, that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

There are two sides to the consigning industry: those who consign their clothes and those who purchase the apparel. Some (like me) play both sides of the field. Others are content to get some cash back for last season’s goods so they can make room in their closets for the season’s latest trends. Both parties are vital to the success of consigning.  Dallas is a gold mine of consignment boutiques and one of my favorites is Clothes Circuit in Preston Center.

New Orleans Road Trip Adventure (Day Two)

In case you were wondering why there weren't very many blog posts last week, I snuck out of town for a few days to enjoy a family vacation for my son's Spring Break. Yesterday, I shared how I screwed up our original plans to hit the beaches of Florida by booking a house the wrong week (oops!). Click here to flash back to Day One of our road trip adventure to see the boys of Duck Dynasty and how we started our Big Easy adventure. Now, onwards...

Cafe Du Monde
Day Two:

My son and I headed to Cafe Du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait. (Note: they only accept cash but there is an ATM across the street if you need it. I learned that the hard way...) A beignet is the French term for a pastry made from deep-fried choux paste, similar to a fritter.  Beignets are commonly known in the U.S. as a dessert served with powdered sugar on top.  It's very similar to the funnel cake at the State Fair of Texas.  They are deliciously messy and if you have children, this place it a "can't miss" dining destination.

My husband was craving a breakfast sandwich from Johnny's Po Boys.  Frommers says of this place, "They put anything you could possibly imagine (and some things you couldn’t) on huge hunks of French bread, including the archetypal fried seafood (add some Tabasco, we strongly advise), deli meats, cheese omelets, ham and eggs, and the starch-o-rama that is a french-fry po’ boy. You need to try it. Really. Johnny boasts that “even my failures are edible,” and that says it all."  By the time Randy caught up to us, we were licking the last of the powdered sugar off our fingers, so we walked up to the top of the hill and let him eat his sandwich on a bench facing the Mississippi River while we looked the other direction onto Jackson Square and watched all the people and horse-drawn carriages go by.

Nini Nguyen makes Vanity Fair's Best Dressed List

Congrats to Dallas stylist (Rhianna is a current client), blogger and fashionista Nini Nguyen who was just named this month's winner of Vanity Fair magazine's International Best-Dressed Challenge.  For 73 years, the list has been the subject of fascination, as much for who is on it as who has been left off. Vanity Fair and its coterie of fashion insiders from around the world decide by ballot who goes on the list. It's published in the September issue. But in a major break with tradition, Vanity Fair has decided to embrace the concept of crowdsourcing and, according to a statement by the magazine's editor, Graydon Carter, is "excited about bringing the iconic Best-Dressed List into the digital age." It recently launched the International Best-Dressed Challenge. Anyone can submit photos of themselves or anyone else (men and women) to be considered for the list. Photos can be posted to Instagram, Twitter or Trendabl with the hashtag #vfbestdressed. Photos can also be uploaded to the magazine's website at www.vf.com/bestdressed through June.

New Orleans Road Trip Adventure (Day One)

Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end. And that is how this story will be told. 3 posts over the next 3 days to entertain you with the sounds, tastes and delights of our New Orleans Spring Break adventure:

We were supposed to spend Spring Break at the beach - Seaside, Florida to be exact. I had a house rented and everything. An email from my son's Language Arts teacher sent me into a spiral of panic when I realized that I had booked a house for the wrong week. The week after Spring Break. DOH! Fortunately, the owner of the lovely home we had put a non-refundable deposit down on, took pity on me and gave us our money back. But that left us without any place to stay 2 weeks before my son's school vacation and we had to scramble for a Plan B destination.  My friend and OSC Contributor, Jayne Chobot, got married in New Orleans a few weeks ago. We had been invited to the wedding but weren't able to attend and I had enjoyed the event vicariously through her Facebook posts. So, when the bottom dropped out on our plans, I said to my husband, "What about New Orleans?"

I have spent many a romantic and drunken weekend in New Orleans over the past 20 years. New Orleans is an inexpensive 45-minute flight on SouthWest Airlines.  The Big Easy is where my husband and I first said, "I love you" out loud to each other - sober. And the courtyard of the Maison Dupuy hotel is where we got married, surrounded by about 30 of our closest friends.  When we drive to Seaside, we always make New Orleans our overnight stop, so my son has been to New Orleans several times - briefly. But could New Orleans be fun for 3 days with a teenager? We decided to find out and headed out on our Spring Break Road Trip Adventure...

Day One:

We decided that en route to the Big Easy we would trek through Monroe, LA. and visit the Duck Commander warehouse. Duck Dynasty (A&E, Wednesdays at 8pm) is the top-rated cable show these days and our family has fallen in love with Willie, Jace, Phil, Uncle Si and the rest of the Robertson family. The show is a sort of modern day Beverly Hillbillies, packed with Redneck humor that always ends with a wholesome family message.  We saw Missy and Jessica at the warehouse and heard that we had just missed Jace. It was awesome just to be at the compound where they film and actually work.

Happy, happy, happy!

About 4 hours later, we pulled into NoLa and checked into The Roosevelt Hotel. This Waldorf Astoria property is a luxury hotel just off Canal Street and just a few blocks to the French Quarter. It has hosted US Presidents, Elvis and now me! The room was lovely, spacious and had a great comfy bed (very important). The property is jaw-droppingly beautiful, all gold and marble and dripping with crystal-laden chandeliers. It's a throwback to a bygone era and has been wonderfully restored to its original glory.

Drinking and Tweeting with Brandi Glanville

This is what happens when you have battling photographers. I'm looking at one camera and Brandi's looking at the other.

Brandi Glanville and Courtney Kerr

The adorably inappropriate Brandi Glanville breezed through town on Sunday to promote her new book "Drinking and Tweeting" at a cocktail soiree at Bistro 31 in Highland Park Village. The signing was supposed to start at 1:30. At 2:30 people were standing restlessly in line. The hold up? Well, for starters, she was just late. But then, aren't all celebs? Usually. Fellow Bravolebrity Courtney Kerr interviewed her for an upcoming segment on D: The Broadcast and then she (finally) hit the signing table posing for quick photos and signing her tome.   For those who watch her on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I have two things to say about her: 1) Yes, she is amazon tall and reed thin and 2) Yes, she is as stunning in person as she appears to be on the show.  I asked her if she was getting a perverse sense of pleasure from drawing such a large crowd in LeAnn Rimes home town. She gave me a "Oh no, you did'unt" look and just laughed...

After her HPV appearance, she headed to the Gayborhood and held another book signing at The Grapevine. Now, I wasn't there, but I heard things got a little crazy.  As in there was lots of alcohol consumed, body parts exposed, a reporter was insulted and an escort out was needed. Allegedly.  But then, really... what do you expect? It's Brandi Glanville! I would have been disappointed if she'd been all proper and ladylike. I'm assuming at least some of what I heard was true because this morning, Brandi tweeted this:

Shinsei honors regulars with new "Favorites" menu

Yes, I did sample every one of these new Shinsei menu items. Oh, yes I did!

Shinsei (pronounced shin-say) means “rebirth” or “new beginning” which is actually what owners Tracy Rathbun and Lynae Fearing had in mind when they joined together to become "the most dynamic Culinary Duo in Dallas". The ladies say, "When we came up with the concept of Shinsei we wanted a place that reflected our lifestyles: sometimes we went out to dinner with our kids and sometimes with our friends and husbands. We wanted to create a place where a night out with the kids didn’t mean food adults had to suffer through or a night out with the parents didn’t mean a stuffy place where kids had to wear a scratchy clip-on tie. Shinsei is just that: a neighborhood gathering place with date night appeal."

These days everybody thinks they are a food expert.  Turns out, some people actually are! Over the past seven years, Shinsei has often let regular customers tweak options off the menu to suit their personal tastes.  Fearing and Rathbun recently had the genius idea to take these custom dishes and create a new "Regulars Favorites" menu.  I was invited in last week to try several new menu items, and from salads to entrees, rolls to desserts there is something delicious on this menu for everyone.  The ladies will like the Healthier Kendall Roll with poached shrimp, avocado, big eyes tuna and jalapeno. If you're a little more daring, try the Live Sea Urchin... I triple dog dare you.  Or maybe you'll be able to sweet talk Chef Shuji “Elvis” Sugawara into creating something innovative and exciting just for you.

Shinsei is located at 7713 Inwood Road at Lovers Lane, Dallas, TX 75209. http://shinseirestaurant.com/

Tickled Pink'd at Beauty Live

Holly Quartaro and Pat Smith   |   Shane Walker and Steve Kemble

Jim Anderson and Emmitt Smith   |   Cynthia Smoot, Pat Smith and Elise Daniel

Galleria Dallas kicked off their 5th annual Beauty Live weekend extravaganza with a fabulous soiree titled Pink'd, hosted by Pat & Emmitt Smith. Fabulous faces like Giselle Phelps, FOX 4's Latoya Silmon, DFW Style Daily's Lisa Petty, Cathy Vieth and Cindy Davis from Big Rich Texas all turned out to support the cause.  Now, it's hard to outshine Pat Smith, but Steve Kemble and Shane Walker both gave her a run for her money (as seen above)!  Guests enjoyed pink cocktails, bites and great tunes provided by DJ Brandon Olds.  Proceeds from the event will go to benefit Treasure You, a nonprofit organization founded by Pat Smith, dedicated to supporting women in financial, emotional or spiritual needs. Funds raised for the organization go directly to women to pay emergency expenses, educational needs, and weekend retreat participation.

Attitudes & Attire continues to inspire at 2013 event

So many parties, galas, events, shows... It's impossible to attend every fabulous thing I receive an invitation to! So, from time to time, I call in the troops to help me cover the scene. Today, OSC Contributor Dawn Mellon recaps the Attitudes and Attire annual luncheon and fashion show and tells you more about this wonderful organization and what they are doing to better our community. Here's her recap:
________________________________________

Allison Cohen-Farquhar with Lyn Berman
Michael Faircloth is the only man I know who could hold his own in a room full of more than 600 women with “attitudes”. Perhaps, that’s why Lyn Berman, head of Attitudes & Attire chose the couture designer to be the Honorary Chairperson for the non-profit agency’s 16th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show, held last Friday at the Dallas Trade Mart.

After 30 years of dressing women, Faircloth knows how to make women look and feel their best as demonstrated by his most famous client, First Lady Laura Bush for whom he designed her Inaugural wardrobe. During his address, Faircloth noted the similarity between his work and that of Attitudes & Attire, including building women’s self esteem and confidence.

The difference between the two, however, lies in the fact that the 16,000 clients Attitudes & Attire has served since its inception consist primarily of women referred by domestic violence shelters, substance abuse treatment centers and other social service agencies. The women may come from dire situations, but after completing the program’s workshops aimed at equipping them with personal, social and career skills, as well as receiving free dental care and a wardrobe suitable for the workplace, they are ready to face the world with an entirely new perspective.

Dawn Neufeld, Karen Lukin, LeeAnne Locken, Danielle Vollmar, Cheryl Rios and Allyson Aynesworth
It's always a treat to see our beloved Ebby Halliday (who just turned 102!) out and about

Two clients who have ‘graduated’ from the program and are now gainfully employed, spoke of the many hardships each of them endured and how Attitudes & Attire has truly transformed their lives. (Note: That’s the reason why there’s a package of tissues at each place setting…their stories are so moving, you’d be hard pressed to find a dry eye in the crowd.)  Before they spoke, these clients strutted their new-found confidence on the runway show along with other clients, volunteers and women from the area wearing pieces from Eileen Fisher, a strong partner of the agency, and, for the first time ever, fashions directly from the Attitudes & Attire Boutique.

Finally, each year, Attitudes & Attire honors one woman whose personality and accomplishments exemplify the full potential of all women with the Kim Dawson “You Can Rise Above It’ Award. This year’s recipient, Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, founder and chief director of the Center for Brain Health at The University of Texas at Dallas, Dee Wyly Distinguished University Chair, and author of Make Your Brain Smarter, was chosen says Berman because “she is someone who understands what it’s like to be a single mother and to have the strength to move forward in her life. We both want to empower women to change their lives.” The funds raised during this year’s show will go directly to support the agency’s many programs. “Attitudes and Attire may be small, but it is a might agency that provides life-changing services for so many women in our community," concluded Berman.

William Noble Rare Jewels recently took the Big Apple by storm when he partnered with Italian-based luxury house VBH to host a special collection in New York to coincide with Fashion Week titled ''Important Twentieth Century Jewels and Gemstones.''  We do everything bigger and better in Texas - especially diamonds! Major snow storms couldn't keep the fashionistas away and guests like Lela Rose braved the blizzard to 'ooh and 'ahh over the sparkly baubles on display.  The collection was presented from Saturday, February 9 to Friday, February 15, at VBH's boutique at 940 Madison Avenue.  It's worthwhile to note that William Noble Rare Jewels is the only jeweler from Texas to ever be asked to do an exhibition of this kind in NYC – and on Madison Avenue, no less!

"VBH was excited to bring this Valentine’s Day collection of important jewels for our clientele," said Hoeksema. Hoeksema and Noble put together a special selection of important twentieth century pieces for this presentation. Noble, known for his unparalled eye in the fine jewelry and gemstone business, is also one of the largest estate dealers in the Southwest. Noble shared, ''I am thrilled to be working with Bruce and VBH. We both share the same philosophies on quality and good design – which make for a very special relationship. The Pin Show showcases Dallas' design talent

(top) Isabel Varela, Diamond Downs and Lucy Dang  |  Jennifer Cloutier, Tiffany Kimbrough and Dawn Mellon
(bottom) The Danny Church Band

The Pin Show is an annual fashion runway presentation designed to showcase emerging designers created by Bryan Embry, Julie McCullough and Mike Thompson. Feeling like they were losing some of their edgy vibe, the event took a chance this year moving from The Fairmont in Downtown Dallas to The Green Warehouse in Trinity Groves. The gamble paid off and the place was thumping and bumping with fashionistas of all ages and the venue had a great energy.

The Dallas Observer said of the presentation, "Stripped down to its bones, the warehouse looked and felt an underground party in a Marfa airplane hanger, populated by well-heeled jetsetters. Two firetrucks acted as alcohol's first responders; a shirtless firefighter bartender doled out cocktails while satisfying multiple fantasies. On one side of the space a reckless ping pong game came alive. Flanking the stage were four women, sitting and dressed in updated WWII factory garb, poised adorably behind vintage sewing machines. Somehow, this all worked together. Just adding to the energy, Danny Church Band served as the evening's musical anchor and serenaded each model who ventured down that keyhole-shaped, club-style runway. The live band was another interesting detour from standard practice pageantry, and it sparked a lot of chair dancing." Yep, that about sums up the vibe.
