Brunch at Public School 214 Gets an A+

Public School 214 is a chef-driven gastropub serving craft beer in West Village. It's no secret that brunch is pretty much what I live for, so I was happy to saunter over one recent weened to check out their offerings. I started my visit with a Bloddy Mary. PS214's is made from housemade bloody mix, bacon, a sea salt rim and garnished with a carrot, pickled green bean and chicken wing. Yes, I said a chicken wing. Almost every brunch menu 'round these parts has Shrimp & Grits on the menu. PS214 takes a fun twist on that with a Chicken Sausage & Cheddar Grits comprised of two fried eggs, blistered tomatoes, grilled corn, bacon, greens, beer-blanc sauce. It was PACKED with flavor and I liked that the grits were more like a polenta cake, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, versus a bowl of grits. The friend I had brought along with me ordered the Eggs Benedict Pizza made with prosciutto, grana padano, hollandaise, and two fried eggs. It was also flavorful and a delicious choice. We had both ordered savory entrees and decided to get something sweet to share (a sort of brunch dessert if you will) and boy was I glad we did. PS214 offers a Stuffed French Toast of the Day and we totally lucked out the day we were there. The Chef's imagination was in overdrive with a PB&J-inspired French Toast. The photo below does not do this dish justice. They started out with hearty slices of Texas Toast. A thick layer of peanut butter cream cheese held the two pieces together. Over the top was a "syrup" of apricot preserves and caramelized bananas. The entire dish was topped off with Toasted Captain Crunch cereal.  Holy Moly, it was freakin' delicious... The Weekend Brunch menu offers select $4 draft beers and “Just About Bottomless” mimosas, beer-mosas, micheladas and bloody marys for just $10. Brunch runs from 11am – 3pm, but the full Weekend Menu with the rest of PS 214 favorites is also available all day. Public School 214 is located in Uptown, in the heart of Dallas’ West Village, at the base of the 3700M building between Lemmon and Blackburn (3700 McKinney Avenue, #148, Dallas, TX 75204).
