Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar: Come Sit a Spell

Lisa Garza with Cynthia Smoot
Well, fiddle dee dee! I do declare that I have found a new place to sit a spell and sip a mint julep.

Lisa Garza, a former contestant on The Next Food Network Star and owner of Lisa Garza Taste Studio, opened the doors of Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar to the public on Monday, February 27th.

I got a sneak peek/taste last Thursday at this exciting new dining experience that features authentic Southern cuisine, cocktails and décor at a media luncheon hosted by Garza.

“The concept is inspired by my Southern roots. I was born in Memphis and raised by an old-school Southern daddy,” Garza says. “I have worked in and around the fine dining scene for almost 20 years—Sissy’s will be a slight departure. I want to build a fun place that feels like home in the South with great food, awesome drinks and friendly service.”

(left) Chef Jeffery Hobbs  (right) Grandma's Layered Salad, Fried Okra and Shrimp & Grits

Garza hand-selected Chef Jeffery Hobbs, her dear friend and partner at Suze for seven years, to execute her culinary vision. If you only order one thing - you MUST get Sissy’s fried chicken: a choice of white or dark meat prepared in a house-blended brine and soaked in buttermilk. It is so damn good that we were literally fighting for pieces at our media luncheon.  And at the grand opening event, Drew Ginsburg ate at least 5 pieces right in front of me and then lamented about how he was going to have to call his trainer first thing the next morning. But, it was so worth it, wasn't it Drew...

At the grand opening on Friday, February 24 I spied Amy Vanderoef and LeeAnne Locken who had skedaddled over from A Night at the Karaoke Lounge benefit for Turtle Creek Recovery Center. DJ Jen Miller and Bri Crum were caught noshing on squash puppies and deviled eggs and Barney's Jackson was cruisin' the crowd working the room is his usual debonair style.  If you wanted to find Lisa Garza... you only had to go as far as the makeshift dance floor where she spent most of the night dancing to the sounds of 70s disco and 80s rock.

(left)  Jen Miller & Drew Ginsburg  (top right)  Rhonda Sargent Chambers & Daniel Winson Lewis
(bottom right) LeeAnne Locken & Rich Emberlin

Expect other Southern staples like corn fritters with whipped honey butter, whole fried okra, chili fried oysters and rémoulade, shrimp and white cheddar-green onion grits, Low Country gumbo, chicken and waffles topped with black strap molasses, and slow-cooked beef short ribs. The desserts were my least favorite part of the menu.  Nothing blew my skirt up.  Keep to the apps and entrees and you will not be disappointed.  The bar program features old-school Southern cocktails and a vodka “tea bar” that consists of crystal urns filled with signature tea-infused punches.

Sissy’s Southern Kitchen & Bar is located at 2929 North Henderson Avenue and will be open for dinner Monday through Wednesday from 5 p.m. to midnight, and Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.  Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling 214.827.9900. Casting Call: Millionaire Matchmaker

I got a call today from the casting director for Patti Stanger's hit show, "Millionaire Matchmaker". Bravo is on the hunt for some fresh millionaire meat and well, why not prowl Dallas!  I have a few ideas... but I thought I'd throw it out there in case there are some millionaires I forget to pitch this to.

Here's the criteria:

Bravo is looking for single men and women who are actual millionaires with great looks and/or personality that are looking for a potential mate - even if someone isn't looking for love, it's a great PR opportunity for people to get exposure and hype themselves and/or their business or brand on national TV. (What?! You mean all those people aren't actually looking for their soul mate on national TV!?) There is no age limit and great stories are a plus:
  • Hoteliers/Private Jets/Restaurateurs/Fun Venue Owners
  • Celebrities, Artists, Performers, Pro-Athletes
  • Real Estate Moguls
  • Vineyard/Farm Owners
  • Divorcee's/Widowers
  • Ex's now Friends to help find each other love
  • Fashion Designers
  • Financial Wizards
  • Internet Millionaires
Millionaires can be straight or gay, any ethnicity.  No heavy accents unless they are a billionaire. Billionaires can do whatever they want!  And you don't have to be a man! Lady millionaires can also apply!!

If you have an interested millionaire, you can contact Roni Garjy at roni.millionaire@gmail.com.  Be sure to tell them Cynthia sent you. It will fast track you.

Ali Dee of Texas Women Needs Your $$$

Ali Dee is one of the stars of CMT's Texas Women. I love this crazy cowgirl and if you do too, then here's your chance to help make her dreams of being the next Faith Hill or Martina McBride come true. Seems that Ali is a bit shy of her financial goals to get her debut CD released and she's reaching out to her fans for help.

Check out her page on Kickstarter to donate towards the cause. Any amount will be welcomed. And hey, when she's on stage in a few years accepting her awards for "Best New Artist"... you can say you helped produce her debt album. That's pretty stinkin' cool.

She writes:
Hi, its me, Ali Dee, a singer/songwriter from Texas and CMT's Texas Women :-) I am ready to share my new music with the world!!! Only one little teensy weensy problem... I need your help to raise to moola to make it happen!! Record labels can spend upwards of $80,000-$500,000 smackers to get their artists albums made, I am asking for a tiny portion of that because I have folks that believe in me and are willing to knock off some change here and there to make it happen. I've got some of the best people lined up to make incredible music, I just want to be able to pay them what they deserve to help me make my dreams come true...

HERE IS WHERE YOU COME IN!

I have the best fans in the entire universe and if you look to your right you will see lots of cool REWARDS I have set up to give away in order to collect the dollars to make this thing a go.  Browse, pick, and then donate whatever you can and know you are a part of helping this gal get to where she wants to be, the top of the charts!!

A few quick notes: We only have 30 short days to meet our goal of $15,000 so PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!!!  NONE of the funding goes through unless we raise the entire $15,000. If each of my facebook (16,000+) fans donate a small amount we can do this in no time! Any money raised over the $15,000 will go directly to the cost of printing/touring/marketing the record.

So DEE TEAM: Dig into your pocketbooks (or man purses) and LET'S DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
XOXO,
Ali Dee

Let's make this little 'ole gal's dreams come true! Dig deep in those big 'ole pockets of yours and give generously folks!

Head DAT way to The Mason Bar

Developed by long-time Dallas entrepreneur Brandt Wood, walking into The Mason Bar feels like you've been transported to a bistro on Magazine Street in New Orleans.  Considering that Wood is a NoLa native, it's not surprising that the vibe in this place is authentically Big Easy cool.

Housed in a former Masonic Lodge (how cool is that in and of itself!?) the interior "features incredible arched, leaded windows with streaming light, plus art, gig posters, photos and just stuff from general manager Brandt Wood's personal collection.   Fixtures are industrial but smooth and finished, not overtly masculine. Padded booths balance wooden bar chairs and white table cloths temper warm, wood cocktail-level six-tops.

photo courtesy of The Mason Bar's Facebook Page
At times, the architecture and the rock-meets-vintage decor can seem like strange bedfellows, but the "this is us" honesty that comes from it all overrides doubts and reinforces a comfortable vibe." says Eater Dallas.

Underground Dinners no longer involves waiting lists, sketchy locations or secret handshakes. Chef David Anthony Temple (a.k.a. Chef DAT) is now is residence inside the Mason Bar's kitchen.

"Menu prices range from $4 to $17 for "snacks" and shared plates, all the way up to $24 for a Waygu Flat Iron Steak or Seared Hawaiian Walu. Locally sourced and vegetarian-friendly menu items were plentiful, and delightfully unexpected for a place with "bar" in its name," informs the Dallas Observer.  Other mains include Seared Sea Scallops with Cheddar Grits, Blackened Redfish with Jambalaya, the requisite Burger, and a Creole Chicken and Biscuit concoction sure to leave your taste buds doing a happy dance.

My only criticism of the place was that the kitchen was slow to deliver. I'm chalking this up to them only being open 3 weeks. Hopefully, they will find their groove and streamline their performance. Once the food arrived, it was so divine, that any irritation I had over the wait quickly vanished.

Wood told me they are busy transforming the basement of the building into a Prohibition-style speakeasy lounge where you will sip cocktails from tea cups. Look for it later this Spring.  Awesome!

Dash For the Beads 2012

Every year, Oak Cliff holds a weekend of Mardi Gras festivities, kicking off with a 5K run called Dash for the Beads.  Participants (including canines) are encouraged to dress up in their best wacky Mardi Gras costume attire for a chance to win bragging rights and a medal at the event.  This year's beneficiary of the race was FIDO Oak Cliff, who's objective is to develop the first dog park in Oak Cliff.

I was invited to be a "celebrity judge" at this year's event and when I asked them who else was participating, they said, "Um, we're working on that." I laughed and said, "Listen, if I'm the best you can do... then you clearly need help!" So I whipped out my trusty Rolodex and enlisted my pals, Chef Monica Greene who owns BEE: Best Enchiladas Ever and Monica's Aca y Alla and Jane McGarry from NBC DFW to help me.

I woke up at 4AM on Saturday to the sound of rain. I cringed inwardly, becasue I knew the race would NOT be called off on account of weather. Runners are crazy people. They will run in sleet, snow, rain, hail... They're like Honey Badgers - they don't care! I went back to sleep for a couple of hours, then rolled out of bed and made it to Oak Cliff by my designated 8AM call time. About 8:30 it stopped raining and we ended up having a LOT of fun. There were about 200+ people who turned out for the race and many of them dressed to impress.  I am featuring some of the winners in this post so you can see the great costumes.  You can see all the photos on Facebook.

As those crazy Cajuns say, "Les bon temps roule!"

Lela Rose: Who Wore It Best?

(left)  Olivia Munn     (right)  Lisa Garza and Cynthia Smoot

Last night, Lisa Garza debuted her new restaurant, Sissy's Southern Kitchen and Bar, to a packed house of well-wishers.  I decided to don my best Southern Belle frock for the occasion and showed up in this vision of loveliness from the Lela Rose Spring 2012 Collection.

Olivia Munn attended the Vanity Fair and Juicy Couture “Vanities” 20th Anniversary at Siren Studios in Hollywood, California on February 20, 2012 wearing the same frock.

So, who wore it best?

Aw, we all know the answer to that question! I can't compete with a Hollywood starlet half my age. But it is a great dress!  Recap of Sissy's menu to come...

In a nutshell, call to make your reservations now. This place is going to be HOT.

Dallas Dweller: Cathy Vieth

If you are like me, every month you flip through the pages of PaperCity, Modern Luxury, F!D Luxe, GrandLuxe and the like, scouring the social pages to see who was deemed worthy of photo recognition.  There's a handful of regulars who seem to do no wrong when it comes to picking the right outfit or arm candy for editorial selection. And then there are those photos that you see and think, "Who IS that person?" Whether they strike your fancy for their fabulous frock or outrageous hair or interesting style.  Dallas Dweller seeks to introduce you to the fabulous faces you've always wondered about but haven't had the occasion to meet in person. This week, let me introduce you to the woman known as "Frisco Barbie":

Cathy Vieth

I first laid eyes on a photo of Cathy in January 2011 when I was scrolling through Facebook and saw some photos from a party talking about the possibility of a Real Housewives of Dallas show.  My first thought was that she would be perfect as the stereotypical Dallas woman: big boobs, big hair and a seemingly big personality!

Cathy & Tommy Vieth

I met Cathy a few months later and fell in love with her sweet smile, Southern-belle charm and huge heart.  Vieth hails from Oklahoma, but after graduation couldn't afford college. So at 19, she left home and headed for Dallas to make a better life for herself and seek her destiny. "I couldn't get out of there fast enough!" she laughs.  I can relate to that sentiment, coming from a small town myself.

Dallas Reality TV Score Card. How We Doin'?

It's no secret that Dallas is a hot-bed for reality TV.  In the last 2 years we've been subject to Most Eligible Dallas, The A-List: Dallas, Texas Multi Mamas, Big Rich Texas, and Texas Women.  So, let's take a look at the scorecard to see how Dallas has fared:

Who wouldn't pay to look at THIS!?
Texas Multi Mamas was not the PR machine that the other two shows were, so, to me the big question marks are The A-List: Dallas and Most Eligible Dallas.  Here's what I know for sure:

Bravo asked 3 members of the original cast from MED to attend an Upfront in Chicago recently. Two of those members were then asked to attend the same event to be held in Dallas in April.

What's an upfront you ask? It's an event or soiree the network holds to wine and dine and schmooze potential advertisers for the upcoming season. They trot out their stars to razzle dazzle them so while they are drooling over say, Matt Nordgren, the Bravo rep can be picking their pockets clean. Oldest trick in the book..

The other thing I know for sure, is that Pink Sneakers Productions has interviewed every "eligible" person under the age of 40 (and a few that are over) to try and recast the show and make it more, um, let's say - dynamic. They were in town last week to film test pilots to show Bravo some new faces.  Doesn't mean Bravo's green-lighted anything, but it looks promising.

It's not looking so good for The A-List Dallas. I say this based on one lone bit of info. which I gleaned yesterday. Logo issued a press release touting new format changes to the channel saying,
"Logo is evolving its programming focus with new series and development deals that reflect gays and lesbians' increasing integration into mainstream culture today and their desire for shows that appeal to their multiple interests."
Eden Wood & Ashley Kelly
You can read the full press release here, but it's basically stating that gays are into more than just shows about gays. So Logo is expanding its programming to air more lifestyle shows and widen its reach.  They went on to release the names of some new shows they would be debuting - and mentioned some old ones. The A-List: Dallas (and New York) were not mentioned. Hmmm. This doesn't mean it's not coming back, but it means they aren't ready to say.

In a "isn't is a small world" moment, I couldn't help but notice that in Logo's press release they seem very excited about their new show featuring Eden Wood from Toddlers and Tiaras fame.  A-List starlet Ashley Kelly recently photographed Eden for a shoe campaign and that "fabulous New York City publicist" they refer to? That would be Andrew Sullivan who also represents Matt Nordgren and Courtney Kerr from MED.

Yep, it's a small, small world and it just gets smaller by the minute.  Do you have some insider knowledge to add to this dialog? Leave a comment on this post or shoot me an email (if you want to stay "off the record"). I'll keep you posted as news (or rumors) happens.

Big Rich Texas: Season Two Premier Party

Hotel Zaza was the place to be Sunday night as over 300 style-setters, celebrity stalkers and A-list wannabes jammed into a soiree hosted by Heidi Dillon and Jarrod Fresquez benefiting The Fashionistas to kick off the latest season of Big Rich Texas.  Almost all of the cast was there, making it a head-turning event for fans who turned out to catch a glimpse of their favorite cast members.  So, who was missing? Let's see, because Pamela Martin was there, you can pretty much guess that Bonnie and Whitney and Leslie and Kalyn stayed far, far away. Which was very unfortunate because there was plenty of room in the space for the tigers to just circle the room and avoid each other.

(left) Melissa and Maddie Poe  (top) Grace and Connie Dieb
(bottom) Hannah Gelbart Martin and Pamela Martin Duarte

When I first walked into the VIP area ('cuz that's I roll, baby) there were two tubs with probably 8-10 bottles iced down in each one. Pamela Martin came over and was fiddling with them and I said, "Dang, Pam! You guys are totally planning a drunkfest for tonight!" (see photo above and you can see how I mistook them for vodka bottles) She was very excited to tell me that she and Hannah have been signed as the new spokesman for Seven Water (a high-end bottled water competing with Voss) and that's what she was serving.

Sipping champagne from my perch in VIP, I spied VH1 Football Wives star Dawn Neufeld, CW33 morning show host Danielle Vollmer, The A List: Dallas star Taylor Garrett (with his new cutie patootie boyfriend, Jeff), floral designer extraordinaire Shane Walker, Bling is the new Black T-shirt Queen Caitlin McConnell, Gina Ginsburg (who was launching The Hair Bar in Southlake the next day!), and good Lord, you couldn't miss Steve Kemble who came decked out in his BRT finery complete with a sequined vest embellished like the flag of Texas, a cowboy hat and the BIGGEST belt buckle known to man. Hilarious!

Cast Members of Big Rich Texas:  LeeAnne Locken, Heidi Dillon's assistant Linnea Thulin (aka "The Rakk"), Heidi Dillon, Pamela Martin Duarte, Hannah Gilbert, Maddie Poe, Connie Dieb, Grace Dieb, DeAynni Hatley, Shaye Hatley and Melissa Poe. Photo courtesy of Jarrod Fresquez.

They attempted to air the episode, but it was so loud in there, you couldn't hear a thing that was being said on the telly. Good thing I had the foresight to tape the show so I could watch it in gleeful detail when I got home later that night! So, did you watch?! Goodness gracious, they certainly kicked off the season with a BANG! Literally!  In the first 5 minutes, Pam and Bonnie were practically brawling over plastic-surgery accusations.  10 minutes later Bonnie is having to be pulled off Leslie. Note to self: do NOT get on Bonnie's bad side. She's small but is not afraid to kick your ass.  I don't recap episodes, but if you want a blow-by-blow, click over to read my friend Merritt Patterson's hilarious article.

(top) Heidi Dillon and Taylor Garrett, new BRT star DeAynni Hatley (in the middle) flanked by pals
(bottom) LeeAnne Locken and Steve Kemble, Dawn Neufeld and Hamilton Sneed

There are some changes to the show this year that should make this season fun, fun, fun!  I'm not going to give you any spoilers - although trust me, I have plenty of them!! First off, is the addition of a new Mother/Daughter trio: DeAynni, Amber and Shaye Hatley from Colleyville. I published a Q&A interview with DeAynni yesterday if you want to learn more about her.  In Episode 3, America will be introduced to two new fantastic "secondary cast members" Heidi Dillon and LeeAnne Locken.

Let me clarify what I mean by "secondary" because I am so sick of everyone who has every walked onto this show calling themselves a "cast member" on their websites and in Bios for charity events and listing it in their Twitter bio. It's ridiculous. If this is the criteria, then I am a full-fledged cast member myself having appeared in multiple episodes last season and - oh yes, you will see me this season as well.  Here's MY criteria: if the Style Network does not have you listed on the Big Rich Texas website as a cast member. You are NOT a cast member. Making an appearance in a scene does not make you a cast member. Appearing in a scene and saying a couple of words, does NOT make you a cast member. This just means you have made "appearances". THAT'S IT.

LeeAnne and Heidi are "secondary characters" this season, meaning they are being introduced to the cast as "friend's of Pam's" this season. You will see them in many episodes. With lines and playing a part in the storyline.  (Oh and what a part they play!!!!  I so wish I could tell you more but I don't want to ruin it.)  If people react well to them, well then, we may see them upgraded next year. Time will tell.  So, hang on tight people. Last night's episode one was a little taste of the drama that is to come.

Tune in to Big Rich Texas on the Style Network every Sunday at 8PM/CST.

Two Sisters Catering Launches At-Home Delevery Service

As a busy working Mom, my greatest tribulation in life is figuring out how to serve my family healthy food - that I don't always have to cook. Between my son's sports schedule and my social commitments it's difficult to find time to sit down together for 15 minutes, much less take the time to prepare and serve dinner! So, we eat out at least 4 times a week. And that means we aren't always eating the most healthy choices. Lots of burgers and pizza! So I was THRILLED to get word that Two Sisters Catering is launching a limited at-home delivery service.  I use their catering services for client events all the time and know first-hand that their food is delicious!

Meet DeAynni Hatley of Big Rich Texas

Big Rich Texas premiered tonight and in Round Two, the Style Network is introducing us to a new cast member.  Google DeAynni Hatley's name (pronounced Dee-anna) and a variety of things come up: Keller Williams Real Estate Agent for the Southlake area, President of Vixen Construction, Owner of Ambiance Accents, Owner of Ambiance Custom Homes, etc...

So, who is DiAynni Hatley and what's her story? Here's my interview with the newest cat to the fight.

Shaye, DeAynni and Amber

Q:  OSC readers need the scoop. Start by telling me what part of the Dallas area you actually reside in.
A:  We live in Colleyville and have for 19 years.  (My daughter) Shaye does attend Grapevine High and Amber attended Colleyville Heritage.  Shaye really wanted to attend GHS for the cheer team and the majority of her friends go to this high school.

Amber, Shaye and DeAynni
Q:  Tell me about your kiddos.
A:  Amber attends TCU and is majoring in Pre-Med. She turns 19 this month on the 26th and has an academic scholarship to TCU. I’m so proud of her!

Shaye is 15 and she attends Grapevine High School.  She is a cheerleader on the JV team and the Competitive squad and also cheers for Champion Cheer on 2 competitive squads.  She is ready to start Drivers Ed. but has been too busy with cheer - thank goodness because her driving makes me nervous!!

Dan & DeAynni Hatley
Q:  It looks like you are affiliated with many companies, mostly in the custom home industry, but the Style Network has introduced you a Party Planner. Of course, they give other ladies "jobs" too. So, what's the story with your "career"?

A:  I did work for Lifetime Designs, but we just shut that portion of the home health company down. So, I’m back to working with my husband!  We have been home builders in Colleyville for 20 years and we love it!

I have owned 2 retail stores in Colleyville and a small trucking company, etc. My girlfriends and I plan a lot of parties together for charities, ill friends, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.   (Some of my friends also auditioned for the show) but they couldn’t work a deal. I’m the only one who was picked, so I’m the lone party planner!

Q: For Fans who want to interact with you, what social channels are you on?
A:  The social channels, I’m new to! Amber just made me a Twitter and Facebook and of course the Style Network! (She has a Personal Profile on Facebook but has yet to start a Fan Page, although I encouraged her to weeks ago to avoid weirdos and stalkers).

Q:  Are you involved with any charities? What do you support?
A:  I love GRACE and battered women shelters.  I always do Toys for Tots at my stores. I used to host and do fashion shows every year for those local charities.  I really miss owning my retail stores!

Q:  Anything else you'd like to share with my readers?
A:  I’m always laughing and smiling (as you will see)! I am a little loud and love people! I have a lot of social friends and we have a lot of fun.  My kids’ education is the most important thing to me so they don’t go through some of the trials we have experienced the last couple of years. I want to have strong girls who don’t have to rely on a man. I’m all about empowering women to be strong and kids!

A huge thank you to DeAynni for taking the time to answer all of my questions, letting me snatch personal photos from Facebook and letting us get to know her a little more. I look forward to watching the train wreck that is Big Rich Texas this season! How about you!?

If you missed the debut episode tonight, don't worry! They are replaying the episode all week. Click here for the schedule.  Tune in to Big Rich Texas on the Style Network ever Sunday at 8 PM/CST.

Neiman Marcus hosts Layfayette 148 for Spring 2012

Lisa Petty, editor of DFW Style Daily, hosted a trunk show at Neiman Marcus/NorthPark on Wednesday, February 15 to introduce the Spring 2012 Collection from Lafayette 148 New YorkYvonne Crum, Rhonda Sargent Chambers, Shona Gilbert, LeeAnne Locken, Allison and Courtney Edwards were among those who turned out to see the latest offerings from one of my favorite designers.

Lisa Petty (middle) flanked by models wearing designs from Lafayette 148's Spring 2012 Collection

Lafayette 148 designer Edward Wilkerson’s Spring 2012 collection was inspired by his voyage to Istanbul, Turkey. He has incorporated the mosaic artwork, ancient history in a cosmopolitan city and the mixture of Asian & western influences into this Collection. “I have revealed all in gorgeous fashion” says Wilkerson.  Yes, he has!

Big Rich Texas Premiers February 19

Set your DVRs for 8pm CT, on the sophomore season of Big Rich Texas, the drama is bigger and so is the cast – with the addition of a NEW cast member!  Party planner, DeAynni, and her two teenage daughters, Shaye & Amber join the country club set and needless to say, not all the ladies are thrilled with her arrival and they are not afraid to show it. This season, the conflict between Pam and Leslie continues as Pam follows through on her mission to expose Leslie as a fraud, leaving Leslie’s relationships with best friend Bon and goddaughter Kalyn in jeopardy.

As Pam reigns at the top of Dallas’ social ladder, Leslie is more determined than ever to take revenge and destroy Pam once and for all. The drama doesn’t stop at the mothers…both Grace and Maddie are desperate for their independence and will do anything to get it, even if it means they have to lie and sneak around in the process. Whitney and Tyler return from Seattle after a painful breakup, and jealousy turns ugly when Tyler openly flirts with other girls, sending Whitney into a fury that has major consequences.

Big Rich Texas was the network’s second most-watched new series ever after Tia & Tamera, and ranked as one of 2011’s fastest growing new series across all cable networks, increasing +74% from premiere to finale among Total Viewers.

And people, let's keep in mind as we watch this Season, that this is NOT a reality show. Style calls BRT a "docu-drama". I call it a soap opera where people use their real names but are not totally playing themselves...

Saint Valentine's Day Luncheon and Fashion Show 2012

When you have an event on Valentine's Day, I guess it is just an unwritten rule that you wear a traditional Valentine's Day color, because the annual "Heart & Sole" Saint Valentine's Day Luncheon and Fashion Show held at the Hilton Anatole was a SEA of red, magenta and pink frocks.

This is why I wore a white print dress from Elie Tahari. I always was a rule breaker...

The fashion show was as much on the floor as on the stage!  These ladies came dressed to impress! Among the fashionable attendees I spotted Lillie Romano, Rhonda Sargent Chambers, jewelry designer Shona Gilbert, Big Rich Texas star Melissa Poe, real estate guru Doris Jacobs and her daughter, Teffy, Holly Davis, Maggie Kipp, Highland Park Village Marketing Director Suzi Ellis, Janet Fresquez, Barbara Daseke and so many more fabulous broads!!

Renee Rouleau & Cathy Vieth
This annual soiree, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, is one of the hottest tickets in town. Kristina Whitcomb, Angela Nash and Bunny Cotten did an amazing job as the 2012 Chairs for this event.  Clarice Tinsley was the Master of Ceremonies and she did a fabulous job (as usual) of entertaining the crowd with witty one-liners while keeping the show on-track.  It didn't hurt that she was flanked by not one, but FOUR cutie patootie boys to help her announce raffle winners. Lucky.

While its easy to focus on the champagne, party pics and gorgeous clothes on the runway - the real reason we were all there was to raise much needed funds for those struggling with blood cancer diseases.

Jose Reyes & Angela Nash
Ellen Terry presented former Dallas Maverick, Ray Johnston, Jr. with the Lynda Atleta "Heart of Gold Award" for  his "fierce and passionate contribution to the struggle against blood cancer".

Next up was Alicia Landry, escorted by former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson, to present two youngsters with the "Spirit of Tom Landry Award" for their "courage, integrity, dignity and dauntless spirit in battling blood cancer through personal experience or volunteering extensively on behalf of others."

That honor went to 12-year old Dalton Douglas for founding the "Dalton's Sib Support" Foundation to aid siblings of those with cancer through events where they can share and support each in their struggles.

Alicia next awarded 13-year old Kenedy Kundysek the same honor. After conquering her own battle with Stage 3 Lymphoma, Kenedy (now in remission) and spends her time collecting books and movies for the hospitals and nurses who served her and her family.  Everyone in the room had tears in their eyes listening to the struggles of these 2 babies and how they have turned their own personal battle into victory for themselves and their communities.

Rhonda Sargent chambers & Holly Davis

Stanley Korshak and Jan Strimple executed a fantastic fashion show featuring designs (and an appearance from) from Chadwick Bell. Also walking the catwalk were Spring fashions from Korshak lines - which is pretty much every major name in the business including Dallas-based Nha Khahn!

When the lights came up, there was a stampede for valet. You ever see 500 women in 6" heels sprint for the parking lot? It is a sight to behold!  This was a super fun way to spend Valentine's Day. I hope you all had an equally wonderful day filled with love and laughter!

Reality TV is Taking Over North Texas!

It's no secret that reality TV is my guilty pleasure. Apparently, a lot of other people share my obsession because these shows have been credited with the demise of daily soap operas and have overtaken the airwaves.  North Texas has become a hot-bed of activity the past two years for production studios looking to cash in on the next big reality hit.  CBS DFW asked me why I thought Texas was such a magnet for reality TV. Here's what I told them:

Win a copy of Kim Whitman's New Book, "Party Planner: An Expert Organizing Guide for Entertaining"

Shay Geyer hosted an intimate book signing and luncheon for Kimberly Schlegel Whitman on Monday, February 13 at her furniture store and design studio, IBB Design Group.  Normally, I would not travel to Oklahoma for event, er, I mean Frisco. But for Shay and Kim I made an exception! (I know it does not offend Shay that I make this joke because she made the same one when she thanked everyone for coming)

Author, Kimberly Whitman

Not only is Kim a 5-time book author but she has recently been appointed Editor-at-Large for one of my favorite magazines, Southern Living.  You might have also seen her on one of her many TV appearances on the "Today Show" or "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway" or maybe you've caught her daily radio show for KVIL 103.7 FM.

Shay gathered 50 of her closest gal pals to celebrate the launch of Kim's newest book, "The Party Planner: An Expert Organizing Guide for Entertaining".   In her latest tome, Kim holds your hand through creating a fun-filled soiree without stress.

Her book organizes the process of planning and hosting a party, from the earliest inception to working with a budget, choosing a venue, hiring catering and musicians, creating a guest list and invitations, decorating, seating, stocking a bar, photography, entertainment, favors and attire-in essence, organizing every last detail for hosting a successful party for any occasion.

Kim autographed a book for me - which I am going to GIVE AWAY to one lucky reader! To enter to win, leave a comment below and tell me your favorite party trick or tip for a successful event. If you don't have one, that's okay! Just say, "I don't have one, that's why I need this book!" I will pick one winner* for all entries on Friday, February 17th at 5PM/CST.

*The winner will be notified by email and you will have 48 hours to respond with your mailing address. If I do not receive a response within 48 hours, I maintain the right to pick another winner.

Neiman Marcus Trends: Spring 2012

Proving that yellow is indeed a hot trend: Sarah Blacketer, Jessica Clancey-Millek and Lisa Petty
Rhonda Sargent Chambers and Holly Davis, Chuck Steelman and Bri Crum

Neiman Marcus at Willow Bend hosted in intimate luncheon and informal fashion show with style maven, Rhonda Sargent Chambers on Thursday, February 9 to showcase the Spring trends.  The event was wonderful timing, being a week away from Valentine's Day, as Neiman's Chuck Steelman kept pointing out as he graciously offered to call husbands, charge cards and wrap gifts for any little 'ole thing you saw that your heart desired. I love that Neiman's service... (wink)

Whole Foods Marketing Director Karen Lukin, DFW Style Daily's Lisa Petty, Holly Davis, City of Dallas' Chief of Staff Paula Blackmon and media consultant Sarah Dodd (and me!) were among those lucky enough to score a seat at the day's shopolooza.

Here are the trends that were covered today:

According to Neiman Marcus, here are the trends for Spring 2012:
Yellow (the new neutral)  |  Pinks  |  Fancy Pants  |  The Dramatic Earring  | The Clutch  |  Silver Shoes  |  Prints  |  Tribal  |  Sports Influence

Dallas Fashion Week Designer Profile: Shirin Askari

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is happening February 9-16 in New York City. Buyers, bloggers, stars and stylists from all over the world will be descending on the Big Apple this week to decide what we will be wearing this Fall.  I thought I would refocus your attention to the tremendous talent pool we Dallasites are lucky enough to have right in our own backyard!

Meet Shirin Askari

You can’t talk about Shirin Askari without mentioning the television show Project Runway - yet. Her arrival on Season 6 of the hit show and the fashion scene came about by means as far from the catwalk as one can get.

“Two months before graduating [from college], I broke my knee playing basketball,” she said, laughing. “Yeah, I know, short me playing basketball! I was stuck at home. My professor e-mailed me one day and said they were taking auditions [for Project Runway] and she thought I should do it. So, I hobbled around on my crutches making my audition video. By August I was in Los Angeles.”

Sadly, it was Christina Aguilera and an unfortunately named “Sequins, Feathers, and Fur, Oh My!” challenge that dashed her dreams. The result was 4th place.

“Going through that, being critiqued in front of the world made me realize that if I could go through that, I could do anything. It made me stronger as a person and as a designer.”  Shirin said she has no regrets about appearing on a reality TV show. “Everything happens for a reason. I’m where I’m supposed to be. The exposure was so great.”

Not surprising, the designer grew up making her own clothes and learning to sew from her mother. Fashion design, however, was the furthest thing from her mind.  “I was always very petite,” she said. “I made my clothes because I didn’t want to buy clothes in the children’s department. Growing up, I wanted to be a pediatrician.”  Shirin, who graduated from Richardson’s Berkner High School and from the University of North Texas in 2008 with a degree in fashion design, said she draws inspiration from everywhere. “I love architecture, and I like to get inspiration from things that aren’t necessarily fashion.”

Askari and Doonan
This week, Askari has teamed up with fashion commentator Simon Doonan at Mercedes–Benz Fashion Week in New York for the opportunity of a lifetime.  Diet Pepsi is giving four up-and-coming designers from across the country the opportunity to showcase their collection at the ‘Diet Pepsi Style Studio’ fashion show on February 9th at 8:00pm in The Box at Lincoln Center.

Curated by Simon Doonan and presented on a set designed by Jonathan Adler, each designer including Askari will bring their unique hometown perspective to three themed fall looks.  The themes, reflecting key style trends, include fierce animal prints, chic and metallic finishes inspired by the sleek Diet Pepsi can.

Doonan will mentor Askari through the process as she translates high-fashion for the everyday woman and takes Mercedes–Benz Fashion Week by storm. So exciting!!

Askari's  collections can be found locally at Elements and Melanie Gayle in Dallas and Suisse in Frisco.  Visit her website at http://www.shirinaskari.com/.  Follow Shirin on Twitter and become a Fan on Facebook.
