FGI Night of Stars 2015 Dazzled and Delighted

Touch your mouse to the image below to scroll through a gallery of images from this event (which have been photoshopped to high hell, I might add): FGI Night of Stars 2015 photos by Rhi Lee

Fashion Industry Gallery (better known as FIG) was the setting for an evening of glitz and high-glamour when the industry elite of Dallas fashion gathered to pay homage to those who have put – and continue to keep – Dallas on the world fashion scene. Actress Morgan Fairchild, who hails from Dallas, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in film and television. Nancy Nasher, owner of NorthPark Center, was the recipient of the Career Achievement Award in Business. David Sutherland was the recipient of the Career Achievement Award in Interior Design for his namesake furniture line, and Nancy Carlson was the recipient of the Art Patron of the Year award. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Prabal Gurung, recipient of the Career Achievement Award in Fashion. Prabal (whose name rhymes with trouble, he slyly told the crowd) presented his Spring 2016 Collection for guests’ enjoyment. The collection paid tribute to his home country of Nepal with fluid silhouettes in hues of orange, rose and saffron for spring 2016.

FGI Night of Stars might as well be the Academy Awards of Dallas fashion because that is how one dresses for the occasion. I always try to wear a Dallas designer to this event because, well, that's the whole purpose of the night - to honor Dallas fashion! This year, I was thrilled to wear a hand-beaded and hand-painted gown from Ese Azenabor's SS 2016 Collection. Attendees entered the gala on a red carpet and walked straight onto a paparazzi-like photo stop. A strategically placed silent auction was positioned in the center aisle of the gallery so one couldn’t avoid it – and no one did. A menu of cauliflower soup, a gourmet chicken pot pie and a pumpkin spice cake delighted those in attendance such as Nancy Rogers, Neiman Marcus’ Ken Downing, Chuck Steelman and Rachel Roberts, Brian Bolke, Tiffany Hendra, Melissa Rountree, Carmen Surgent, Jan Showers, and Ken Weber. Shout out to my table hosts, Heidi and Bill Dillon, for letting me a part of the cool kids table along with LeeAnne Locken, Hamilton Sneed, Gina Ginsburg, Dallas Dillon, Prashe Shaw and Dan Pritchett.

The event is FGI Dallas’ largest fundraiser of the year and proceeds from the event fund FGI Dallas’ foundation scholarships. This year marks the 66th year of Fashion Group International of Dallas (FGI Dallas). FGI Dallas is part of Fashion Group International, Inc., a global, non-profit, professional organization with more than 6,000 members representing all areas of the fashion industry. Fashion Group International, Inc. provides a high-profile forum to promote the fashion business by hosting events that educate and facilitate the exchange of ideas by giving back to the community. This Holiday Season Give The Gift Of Giving

This holiday season, The Dallas Foundation has a gift that’s both convenient and priceless: Giving for Good cards. They’re just like retail gift cards, except the value on the cards can be donated to hundreds of 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the United States.

When you buy Giving for Good cards and distribute them to friends, relatives, colleagues or clients, you’re giving them a chance to experience the joy of supporting a charity they admire. You also experience the joy of receiving a tax deduction for your purchase. This year, The Dallas Foundation is encouraging people to give to local charities as part of the #GivingTuesday movement on December 1.

Created by the 92nd Street Y in New York City in partnership with the United Nations Foundation to counterbalance the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzies of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday aims to nurture charity and celebrate generosity via social media. Giving for Good cards are a unique means to foster philanthropic giving among others. “Giving for Good cards present a fun and easy gift-giving opportunity for the holiday season,” said Mary Jalonick, president of The Dallas Foundation. “The recipient of the card gets to choose any nonprofit across the country to benefit. The real value goes beyond the dollar figure on the card, though. Their value is encouraging philanthropy.”

Since The Dallas Foundation introduced Giving for Good cards in 2011, they’ve raised more than $350,000 for nonprofits in Dallas County and across the United States. International corporations have ordered them for employees, attorneys and financial advisors have given them to valued clients, and grandmothers have bought them to help teach grandchildren about charity. One family even presented Giving for Good cards to guests at their son’s wedding reception. The Dallas Foundation has created four new holiday-themed card designs this year. Buyers also can choose designs appropriate for birthdays, celebrations or other special events. Businesses can order customized designs that include their company names or logos on the cards. Giving for Good cards can be purchased online at http://www.dallasfoundation.org/AboutUs/GivingforGoodCard/tabid/330/Default.aspxg.

Dixie Chicks Bring A Badass Attitude and Something To Prove in 2016

Call them innovators, renegades, villains, mothers, influencers or music superstars. I call them freakin' fabulous! In March 2003, Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines made a comment about President (at the time) George W. Bush that essentially ended the band's career. Personally, I thought the backlash was a little extreme but in Country music it is an unwritten rule that an artist is strictly forbidden to talk bad against God, your Country, and apparently the President. They say time heals all wounds and the Dixie Chicks have announced a return to touring with their upcoming DCX MMXVI World Tour to prove they may have been down, but they sure they hell aren't out.  Since their first album, the music of the Dixie Chicks have stirred emotions in fans across the world making them one of the most biggest and most influential bands of our time. Not just "big for a country band" or "big for a big female band," the Dixie Chicks are a multi-platinum selling act in North America, Europe and Australia. They are one of a mere handful of acts with multiple albums achieving "diamond" status (meaning sales over 10 million copies) - both WIDE OPEN SPACES (1998) and FLY (1999) hit that stratospheric landmark - and over the years have sold over 30 million albums worldwide and won thirteen Grammy Awards. Their on-stage reputation has helped them sell over $100 million worth of concert tickets while outspoken songs like "Goodbye, Earl" and "Not Ready To Make Nice" made it clear that this power trio played by nobody's rules. The Dixie Chicks have grown from a band into a cultural force becoming the biggest selling female band of all time in the U.S. The multiple Grammy Award®–winning and multi-platinum selling band will visit over 40 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada in 2016 with a Dallas stop To Gexa Energy Pavilion on Friday, August 5, 2016.  Citi® cardmembers will have access to pre-sale tickets beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. local time through Citi's Private Pass® Program. For complete pre-sale details, visit www.citiprivatepass.com. The public can jump on this show this Saturday, November 21 at noon by visiting www.livenation.com.

Andy Cohen reveals how Ladies of Dallas became Real Housewives of Dallas

Click to head over to Bravo to watch this video interview

On a recent edition on Bravo's The Daily Dish, Andy Cohen revealed that Real Housewives of Dallas has been a long time coming. "We've been tinkering around with Dallas for, I want to say seven years we've been thinking about this. We cast there. We cast in Houston. We didn't get it right in either place," Andy explained. "And then this casting happened, I want to say, maybe a year ago. (Try a year a a half, Andy) I don't even know. We thought this could be good. Is it a Ladies of Dallas? Is it a Housewives? And then we we saw it we thought... This is a Real Housewives of Dallas" To which I say, "Yaaaaaaaas!" Andy goes on to say that the ladies that have been cast remind him of Orange County and New York in the early years. When asked to elaborate, he said, "It's the way they communicate with each other. It's about how they live their lives, it's about families, it's very grounded... and it just harkens back to early Housewives." Andy is clearly infatuated with the cast of RHOD and I'm sure we will be too! Bravo has yet to announce the cast of RHOD and speculation is rampant among both local and national media outlets. Even I have been fingered by many as a possible candidate here and here and here. Aw, shucks... You sure know how to flatter a girl. Like Andy loves to say, we will just have to "watch what happens" but you know you will here it here first - so stay tuned!

Dallas Takes It All In Fashion X Austin's BLANC competition

Fashion X Founder Matt Swinney, Venny Etienne, model wearing Etienne's winning look, Neil Marek, model wearing Marek's winning look and Bernina representative

On November 6, Bernina Presented Fashion X Austin: BLANC. The event was a one-night fashion spectacle with live fashion presentations and photo shoots from stunning Texas-based designers and pop up shops hosted by over 40 top brands in the local Texas fashion scene as an early “holiday shopping” experience. Each brand offered a unique “blanc” item with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Austin Fashion Fund. 59 entrants had been curated down to 12 garments that were all inspired by the Swiss Alps (BERNINA’s home country). Dallas-based Neil Marek was named the winner of the first ever BERNINA Blanc Design Challenge and was awarded a prize package valued over $20,000. Marek is co-designer of the Marek + Richard line, known for its "funky fresh" line of mens tops, underwear and swimwear. I understand this competition was his first foray into womenswear and it's clear he is headed in a positive direction with this win.

Fan Favorite was Dallas' own Venny Etienne who received a Bernina 1300 MDC serger and coverstitch valued at $2,300. Sweet.  Other finalists included: Alisha Contreras, Hannah Leonard, Amanda Scarlett Smith, Dina Chavez, Kassie Carrell, Kraig Pieper, Marissa Marsh, Samantha Plasencia, and Stefanie Bell. I asked Etienne how he came up with his winning design. "I was particularly inspired by the shapes of the Swiss mountains. That is where I came up with the idea of the triangular motif through the garment. I also knew I wanted to create a piece that was strong but yet still clean. She had to look in charge and tall so I decided to create a 2-piece crop top look." Etienne has had quite a year, from winning RAW artist designer of the year, a Paris scholarship from FGI Dallas along with a serger and cash scholarship, showing his LeVenity SS16 line during Style Fashion Week in LA and now this accolade. So, what's next for this emerging Dallas designer? "I must say this has been an amazing year for me and for my brand LeVenity," muses Etienne. "We are currently starting the pre-order process for our new SS16 line for LeVenity and will be working on the next collection. Soon you will see the LeVenity line on the racks of major luxury boutique stores in major cities near you!"

Brunch at Public School 214 Gets an A+

Public School 214 is a chef-driven gastropub serving craft beer in West Village. It's no secret that brunch is pretty much what I live for, so I was happy to saunter over one recent weened to check out their offerings. I started my visit with a Bloddy Mary. PS214's is made from housemade bloody mix, bacon, a sea salt rim and garnished with a carrot, pickled green bean and chicken wing. Yes, I said a chicken wing. Almost every brunch menu 'round these parts has Shrimp & Grits on the menu. PS214 takes a fun twist on that with a Chicken Sausage & Cheddar Grits comprised of two fried eggs, blistered tomatoes, grilled corn, bacon, greens, beer-blanc sauce. It was PACKED with flavor and I liked that the grits were more like a polenta cake, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, versus a bowl of grits. The friend I had brought along with me ordered the Eggs Benedict Pizza made with prosciutto, grana padano, hollandaise, and two fried eggs. It was also flavorful and a delicious choice. We had both ordered savory entrees and decided to get something sweet to share (a sort of brunch dessert if you will) and boy was I glad we did. PS214 offers a Stuffed French Toast of the Day and we totally lucked out the day we were there. The Chef's imagination was in overdrive with a PB&J-inspired French Toast. The photo below does not do this dish justice. They started out with hearty slices of Texas Toast. A thick layer of peanut butter cream cheese held the two pieces together. Over the top was a "syrup" of apricot preserves and caramelized bananas. The entire dish was topped off with Toasted Captain Crunch cereal.  Holy Moly, it was freakin' delicious... Click here to see the entire brunch menu.

The Weekend Brunch menu offers select $4 draft beers and “Just About Bottomless” mimosas, beer-mosas, micheladas and bloody marys for just $10. Brunch runs from 11am – 3pm, but the full Weekend Menu with the rest of PS 214 favorites is also available all day. Public School 214 is located in Uptown, in the heart of Dallas’ West Village, at the base of the 3700M building between Lemmon and Blackburn (3700 McKinney Avenue, #148, Dallas, TX 75204). Self and valet parking is accessible via McKinney or Noble between Cityplace West Drive and Blackburn. (214) 599-6234

Got $229K? Check Out The Bentley Bentayga SUV

Bentley Bentayga debuts in Dallas
Photos by David Alvey

Park Place Dealerships Chairman Ken Schnitzer and Bentley Motors CEO Michael Winkler recently unveiled Bentley’s first ever SUV, the Bentayga. The Bentayga is the fastest, most powerful and exclusive and luxurious SUV in the world. As with all Bentley’s, the Bentayga will be handmade in Crewe, England, by third- and fourth-generation craftsmen who spend hours stitching, polishing, and refining to perfection the tiniest detail. While the car comes with a choice of four or five seats covered in a choice of 15 different hues of leather, plus dozens of combinations of exotic woods and brushed metal and carbon fiber trim, the true beauty of a Bentley is the Bespoke program, which offers the ultimate in customization. Currently on its North American Tour, this was the first and only opportunity for North Texas to see the vehicle until the 2017 Bentayga hits the market in mid-2016. Outfitted with a 600 horsepower, twin turbo, W12 engine, the Bentayga will go from 0 - 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and has a top speed of 187 mph. They are calling this a SUV, I'm calling this a $229,000 tricked up station wagon. Crazy. While it’s hard to imagine someone taking this vehicle off-road, it will certainly handle the most rugged terrain with 663 foot pounds of torque over a four-wheel-drive, eight-speed automatic transmission. The car was in development for more than four years. Bentley Dallas is part of the Park Place Premier Collection, located at 5300 Lemmon Avenue near Love Field. Two Days of Football, Golf, Horses, and Hope at Equest Men’s Auxiliary Golf Classic 2015

Equest Men’s Auxiliary Golf Classic 2015 photos: Tony Valadez

Equest’s fundraising dinner quickly transformed into an intimate rally motivated and inspired by the words of football legend and keynote speaker Mike Singletary. His renowned intensity and passion that was showcased for years on the football field served a different purpose at the third annual Equest Men’s Auxiliary Golf Classic, Nov. 1-2, at Gleneagles Country Club – to touch the heart of each and every guest. Kicking-off the two-day event, a beer and wine reception, silent auction, putting games (golf, not football!), and dinner launched the evening’s festivities before Mike Singletary took the floor. Powerful in his presentation, Singletary recognized the 50 veterans who attended the dinner as part of Equest’s Hooves for Heroes program and the numerous Equest volunteers who continually strive to make a difference every day (including his own daughter, Brooke, who is also an Equest volunteer), saying, “For any team to experience greatness, you have to have people with heart.” In his confident coaching voice, he closed, “We will finish the race, and we will win.”

It's official! Bravo announces Real Housewives of Dallas

Last week, rumors began to swirl that a new Real Housewives franchise was on the horizon. Within hours the general consensus was that Dallas was the likely target. Today, Bravo has put us out of our misery and announced not one, but TWO, new Housewife franchises that will air in 2016. Real Housewives of Potomac will air in January 2016 and Dallas will follow sometime thereafter (exact date TBD). In June 2011, Variety interviewed Andy Cohen about the state of reality TV. At the time, Bravo had replicated its “Real Housewives of Orange County” formula in six additional locales: New York, Atlanta, New Jersey, Miami, Beverly Hills and Washington, D.C. Variety asked Cohen if there any bandwidth left for more shallow women with deep pockets? Cohen said yes, if the cast is right. “You only want cities with strong points of view, cities that have strong regional personalities,” he explained. “We’ve tried to mount a Texas (incarnation), but we never hit the nail on the head with casting.”

Casting for a docu-drama began in August 2014 and the pitch was for a show tentatively titled "How To Make It In Dallas". In March 2015, Bravo shocked everyone (including the cast) when it announced Ladies of Dallas to their lineup as a follow-up to their smash hit Ladies of London. So how and when did it change to Real Housewives? Good question. A source tells me that once filming wrapped and they started editing the show, Bravo execs were ecstatic over the footage and in a unanimous decision it was decided that the show would not air as Ladies of Dallas, but launch as RHoD. Clearly, they feel that the proverbial nail head has been hit. BAM!  "The Real Housewives Of Dallas, is a natural extension of the franchise with a Southern twist that 'y'all' will enjoy, according to Bravo's Andy Cohen. According to Bravo's press release, “The Real Housewives of Dallas” will "follow a group of sophisticated southern socialites, as they claw their way to the top of the city's social scene. The series gives an exclusive look into their glamorous galas, scintillating scandals, and enormous egos, to prove exactly why everything is bigger in Texas."

If you plan to watch RHoD, you will want to bookmark this blog, because no one will have more insight into what you are about to witness than me. Believe it. If past franchises/casts are any indication, we are going to have a lot to talk about and it's gonna be JUICY. To those of you who have been tweeting and messaging me to ask if I am on the cast, I am immensely flattered that you think I am witty/pretty/interesting enough to make the cut. Thank you for the ego stroke. We will all have to wait for Bravo to confirm the cast so I can really get to work... Stay tuned!

Oh So Artsy: Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots opens at the DMA on November 20

Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots
November 20, 2015 to March 20, 2016
Dallas Museum of Art  | Chilton I Gallery

I like art, but I don't claim to understand it. Pollock is one of those who leaves me scratching my head, but I love the debate and look forward to a new exhibit coming to the Dallas Museum of Art. Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots is only the third major U.S. museum exhibition to focus solely on the artist hailed as “the greatest painter this country has ever produced.” On November 20, the Dallas Museum of Art will present what experts have deemed a “once in a lifetime” exhibition, organized by the DMA’s Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art Gavin Delahunty: the largest survey of Jackson Pollock’s black paintings ever assembled. This exceptional presentation, which critics hailed as “sensational," "exhilarating," "genius," “revelatory,” and “revolutionary” on its UK premier at Tate Liverpool, will receive its sole US presentation in Dallas and include many works that have not been exhibited for more than 50 years. With more than 70 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints, the exhibition will first introduce audiences to Pollock’s work via a selection of his classic drip paintings made between 1947 and 1950. These works will serve to contextualize the radical departure represented by the black paintings, a series of black enamel paintings that Pollock created between 1951 and 1953. An unprecedented 31 black paintings will be included in the DMA presentation. Exhibiting works from the height of the artist’s celebrity set against his lesser known paintings will offer the opportunity to appreciate Pollock’s broader ambitions as an artist, and to better understand the importance of the “blind spots” in his practice. Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots will require a $16.00 special exhibition ticket. To learn more or purchase tickets, visit https://www.dma.org/art/exhibitions/jackson-pollock-blind-spots.

The Huckleberry Foundation Raises $30K For Special Needs Families

Touch your mouse to the photo below to scroll through a gallery of images from this event: The Huckleberry Foundation 1st Annual Luncheon
photos provided by the Huckleberry Foundation

On October 22, 2015, the Huckleberry Foundation held their first annual luncheon at the Filter Building at White Rock Lake featuring Molly Russell, Founder of The Huckleberry Foundation; Jamie Reynolds, Program Executive at Connecting Point of Park Cities; and Heidi R. Bruty, M.D.  Molly Russell founded The Huckleberry Foundation to provide financial assistance to families with special needs children and local organizations that support special needs individuals when her oldest son was diagnosed at age four with high-functioning autism. Molly and her husband quickly realized the impact that a special needs diagnosis can have on families, particularly in the financial area. The high cost of quality care, education and services to help these children live a full and happy life is one that many families simply can’t afford. The Huckleberry Foundation was formed out of a desire to help these children obtain the care and services needed to ensure they live as full a life as possible. This first annual luncheon helped raise approximately $30,000 for special needs families and their HUCK HELPS program. To learn more, visit http://www.thehuckleberryfoundation.com.

Oh So Tasty: Brunch at Ziziki's

Ziziki's has been around for as long as I've lived in Dallas - at least 20 years - so I tend to forget about it because there are always so many new places opening and getting media buzz. I was so happy when they reached out to me and invited me in to experience their new brunch buffet for several reasons:

a) I am a flavor/spice junkie so I love Greek food
b) I had no idea they even were serving brunch
c) I love, love, love a buffet because you can graze and try a lot if different things

Buffet grazers will NOT be disappointed with the vast selection. You can choose from artichoke hummus, Greek and Ziziki's salads, pastas, chicken souvlaki, lamb souvlaki, keftedes (lamb meatballs) in a marinara sauce, seasonal fish with lemon artichoke sauce, housemade salmon, Greek potatoes, pita, Greek yogurt with berries, baklava, and made-to-order omelettes and Eggs Benedict. They also have some fantastic brunch cocktails including the new Pomegranate Ouzo Martini, The Athena and the Blood Orange Shandy. The buffet cost is $24.95 per person / $9.95 per child and includes a complimentary Mimosa or glass of Rose wine. If buffets aren't your thing, the Ala Carte lunch menu is also available.

I visit the Ziziki's in Travis Walk located at 4514 Travis St. (off Knox. St.), Dallas, TX 75205. I think Travis Walk has one of the prettiest patios around with a beautiful fountain and pretty landscaping. I also like that after you eat, you can work off all those calories shopping the boutiques of Knox. St. If you live in North Dallas, you should visit the Ziziki's at 11661 Preston Rd. at Forest, Dallas, TX 75230. https://www.zizikis.com/. Bon appétit - or as the Greeks would say, "Kali orexi!"

Dallas Opera Kicks Off Its 2015-16 Season With First Sight

Touch your mouse to the screen below to flip through scenes from this event: 2015 First Sight Fashion Show & Luncheon benefiting The Dallas Opera
Certain photos c/o Kristina Bowman for the Dallas Opera

I was thrilled to attend the First Sight Fashion Show and Luncheon last Friday, chaired by Ellen and Don Winspear with Honorary chairs Mrs. Micki Rawlings and The Honorable Michael S. Rawlings. The C. Vincent Prothro Lobby in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House was transformed into a fashion venue complete with runway and Dallas’ most glamorous models donning designs. Fashions from British luxury brand Mulberry, which opened this year at NorthPark Center, were shown and I especially loved the big chunky shoes that came clomping down the runway. Hoorah for comfortable footwear! In what has become a tradition at FIRST SIGHT, five custom pieces—each a representation of an opera produced this season and created by five internationally renowned Dallas-based designers—kicked off the show.  The designers who took on this creative challenge were: Geoffrey Henning (Great Scott); Khanh Nguyen for Nha Khan (Tosca); Edo Popken (Becoming Santa Claus); Elizabeth Anyaa (Manon); and Michael Faircloth (Show Boat). Each drew inspiration from the opera for which they were selected, from The Dallas Opera’s incredible 2015-2016 Season, to craft a custom piece, donating their time and materials for FIRST SIGHT. I have been a fan of opera and classical music for as long as I can remember. The love affair started early listening to Mozart and Beethoven as background music for my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons and I delighted as Alfalfa crooned to his beloved Darla the arias from Figaro in The Little Rascals. The first opera I ever saw was Pirates of Penzance when I was 10 or 11 years old at the Music Hall at Fair Park and I was hooked. The pageantry and extravagance combined with the theatrics and beautiful music was not lost on me and opera has held a special place in my heart ever since that outing. I hope that you will consider taking in a performance this season and experiencing the magic that is the Dallas Opera!

6th Annual Purses with a Purpose Breaks Fundraising Record for 2015

6th Annual Purses with a Purpose photos c/o Transformance, Inc. via Chuck Clark Photography

On October 21, a record-breaking $204,000 was raised for Transformance, Inc. (formerly Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas) from the nearly 500 attendees at 6th Annual “Purses with a Purpose” charity fundraising event held at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field. The amount is the most ever raised in the six-year history of the event and came largely from matching gifts and those bidding on the extravagant collection of purses donated to the cause of helping women and families in need. Deborah Ferguson, KXAS NBC 5 morning anchor, served as the celebrity emcee and keynote speaker Carmen Rita Wong, CNBC financial contributor and author of The Real Cost of Living, spoke to the guests about empowering their own financial literacy journeys. “Purses with a Purpose is our signature annual fundraising event and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results,” said Ken Goodgames, president and CEO of Transformance. “We also officially announced our name change from Consumer Credit Counseling of Greater Dallas to Transformance and the success story provides a dramatic backdrop for what our future holds.” Event proceeds underwrite community outreach and financial education classes provided to low-to-moderate income families, especially those headed by women. www.transformanceusa.org.
