The Salvation Army Doing the Most Good Luncheon 2016

Jimmy Wayne with Majors Barbara and Jonathan Rich

The Salvation Army’s 2016 Annual Doing The Most Good Luncheon was held on Thursday, November 17 in the Chantilly Ballroom at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas. Jimmy Wayne is an accomplished recording artist, keynote speaker and three-time New York Times bestselling author (Walk To Beautiful, Paper Angels) whose life’s mission is raising awareness for at-risk youth in foster care. In his keynote, Jimmy shared difficulties he faced growing up, which made for a complicated childhood. His father abandoned the family. His mother was sent to prison. His stepfather tried to murder him. As a teen, he was homeless, living on the street before being taken in by foster parents who helped change his life. He also spoke about the help he received from The Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army provided food and clothes to my mom, sister and me when I was nine years old. They provided me my first guitar through the angel tree program when I was 14 years old,” said Jimmy. “I vowed when I ‘made it’ I would give back to the Salvation Army. The first song I wrote when I received my first record deal was ‘Paper Angels’ – a song about the Angel Tree program. I wrote about the Salvation Army in my book Walk To Beautiful.”

CFDA Brings Its 4.0 {Fashion Incubator} Designers To Dallas

Now in its fourth iteration, the CFDA {Fashion Incubator} is a two-year mentor program for fashion labels with the goal of fostering brand growth. Through the initiative, chosen designers are granted low-cost studio space in Manhattan’s Garment District and are treated to a series of seminars, workshops, and lectures with luminaries in the field. A few weeks ago, five 4.0 CFDA {Fashion Incubator} designers traveled to Dallas. The city’s W hotel hosted a showcase that served to connect the participants to key players in this all-important retail market. The visit included appointments with the likes of Tenoversix, Neiman Marcus, and Forty Five Ten, an excursion to the Dallas Contemporary for Bruce Weber’s Far From Home exhibition, and the piece de resistance: a runway show and model installation at the W featuring key looks from each designer’s Spring 2017 collection. So, what did these fashion innovators of tomorrow think of Dallas?

Dallas Theater Center Brings Equal Opportunity to A Christmas Carol

Here's to You, Miss Scrooge
by Jayne Herring

The rant I will give every stranger-at-a-bar within earshot about this Dallas Theater Center’s production of A Christmas Carol is simply: The set and the music are magical, the message and performances are beautiful, the show and the theatre are gems of our city, and all will shock even the most cynical heart into the holiday spirit. But this one, this year, this is truly not to be missed. We have seen many versions of the classic Dickens story both on stage and screen, and although DTC’s version adapted by Kevin Moriarty is especially brilliant year after year, the one word I keep coming up with about this particular production is - POWERFUL. First I must give my fangirl shout-outs to those who delighted me the most, starting with Liz -freaking- Mikel. Hearing her voice boom through the Wyly Theatre felt like a big 'welcome back to Dallas' hug. I would pay to listen to this woman sing financial reports. In this production we get her as Mrs. Fezziwig, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and frequent ensemble speaking and singing roles that are impossible to miss. Sally Nystuen Vhale as Scrooge ranks as one of the best performers I have seen on a stage. More on her later. Alex Organ’s gentle voice as Bob Cratchit, Gabrielle Reyes’s compassion (as Lucy) and her ability to show a young woman’s slow withdrawal from humanity (as young Scrooge) both warmed my heart, and the 22-year DTC veteran Chamblee Ferguson as both Mr. Dilber and Mr. Fezziweg was a welcome familiar comical presence throughout. The rest of the cast, including Brierley Acting Company members, SMU students, and the fabulous youth ensemble - oh so important in this piece- fill the space with songs and all the feels.

Prepare To Be Cerebrally Stimulated At The #hearhere 2017 Lecture Series

One of the things I love about Dallas is that there is always something fun and interesting to do. I love events, shows, and lectures that are out-of-the-norm, interesting and unusual. Nothing personifies that description better than The AT&T Performing Arts Center's #hearhere series – a speaker series with dynamic discussions from leaders in the arts and sciences. Featuring thought leaders whose work has become a cultural phenomenon, #hearhere removes the barrier between audiences and some of the most interesting minds of our time. This third season features the return of American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author and science communicator, Neil deGrasse Tyson, delivering his most popular talk entitled “The Cosmic Perspective;” American author and social commentator known for her sardonic perspective on American life, Fran Lebowitz; one of America’s greatest storytellers, Garrison Keillor; and one of the most celebrated writers of our time, Neil Gaiman. I can't wait to attend these stimulating evenings! Who's with me!?

Four Ways To Take Amazing iPhone Photos

Sponsored post:

Four Ways To Take Amazing iPhone Photos
Which is not hard to do when the new Lincoln Continental is our model

Recently, The Lincoln Motor Company invited me to spend the afternoon with their team to have an up-close-and-personal experience with the all NEW Lincoln Continental. The Lincoln Continental has had a starring role in many Hollywood films, pop culture and in political circles. Elvis Presley drove one around Memphis, in “The Godfather,” Sonny Corleone was assassinated in one as he drove one up to the Long Beach causeway toll booth and it was the car that shuttled US presidents around Washington and the world. Retired in 2002, the automobile brand synonymous with luxury has been brought back by Lincoln for 2017 as its top-of-the-line sedan. A driver picked me up mid-morning to allow me to sit in the back seat and enjoy the rear-seat amenities: audio and climate control, reclining seats, a side window shade and a chauffeur button that moves the front passenger seat forward. This first touchpoint with the Continental tied in nicely with a new service Lincoln has recently launched called Pickup and Delivery. It's part of a larger initiative known as The Lincoln Way. Need an oil change or regular maintenance service? They will meet you wherever you are (home, office, Northpark Center, Dallas Zoo...), provide you with a complimentary Lincoln loaner, then return the serviced vehicle to you at the destination of your choice. No fuss, no muss, no wasting time driving back and forth and waiting. I like it. Lincoln is the only luxury automaker that provides this service as part of the vehicle's warranty.

To make our experience with the car more interactive, they brought in professional automotive photographer Kevin McCauley from Houston. Kevin shoots almost exclusively with an iPhone and was eager to share some of his tips & tricks for creating amazing shots. Never one to be greedy, I am paying it forward by sharing them with you!

Ally's Wish Kicks Off 3d Annual Boots & Blessings Gala

Photo c/o Bob Manzano

On Thursday, November 15th Ally’s Wish hosted a kick-off event at the new Reese Witherspoon inspired retail boutique, Draper James, to celebrate the upcoming 3d annual Boots & Blessings Gala to be held on Saturday, April 29 at Gilley’s Dallas. Tickets will start at $150 with tables & sponsorships from $1,500. Ally’s Wish has served over 40 terminally ill moms granting wishes so that their children and families will have lasting memories. CLICK HERE to see a gallery of photographs from this event.

It was fitting that the Draper James team opened their new digs in Highland Park Village to host a Southern soiree with bites by Wendy Krispin Caterer and Korbel California Champagne Non-Vintage Brut Rosé. And with 10% of sales going back to Ally’s Wish, what a perfect reason to do some early holiday shopping. Kidd Kraddick Morning Show radio personality, Kellie Rasberry served as the evening’s emcee. As guests filled the store, Kellie began sharing her connection to Ally’s Wish noting, “It is the moms that the wishes are granted for, but the children who have the lasting memories”. As a mother herself she felt connected to an organization that gives so graciously of their hearts and their time to serve the women who are nominated. Event Co-Chair, Kim Gilchrist welcomed guests and shared her excitement for the upcoming April 29, 2017 event that will take place at Gilley’s Dallas. A fellow friend of the organization, Kim’s goal as event chair is to help ensure that future moms wishes are granted through the support of gala donors. After thanking additional sponsors including Kick-off Sponsor J. Philips Mortgage, Kim recognized Kersten Rettig who will serve as Underwriting Chair and Laura Armstrong Downing who will serve as Advisory Chair.

Dancing in the clouds, hot air balloons, flight simulators, hair-raising experiments, dancing birds and floating foods had visitors soaring at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science’s annual fundraising gala, Night at the Museum: Elevate, on Saturday, Nov. 12. Held on all five levels of the Museum, the nearly sold-out soiree featured “play-and-party” activities, live entertainment, delicious science-infused fare and cocktails from Wolfgang Puck Catering, and dreamy décor that had patrons floating on cloud nine. “From aviation and nature’s beauty, to the future of flight, this year’s Night at the Museum will explore the many interpretations of elevation,” said Dan Kohl, the Perot Museum’s interim chief executive officer. “This event supports our mission to inspire minds through nature and science by allowing us to sponsor community outreach programs, fund research, provide financial assistance for students and bring in traveling exhibitions to our visitors.” An invitation-only VIP pre-party, presented by Highland Capital Management, kicked off the evening and in a nod to the Perot Museum’s fall traveling exhibition, Birds of Paradise, where Earth’s most flirtatious birds are visually displayed in a simulated exotic New Guinea rainforest guests got to witness a live bird show.

Discover Secrets Of British Country Life In The Long Weekend

Fans of the British monarchy and Downtown Abbey won't want to miss distinguished British author and historian, Adrian Tinniswood, OBE, to discuss his latest novel, The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House, 1918-1939, on November 19. The lecture, which is free with paid garden admission, is from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Rosine Hall followed by a book signing. Books will be available for purchase.

For those of you wondering what the heck OBE means: an OBE is a Queen's honour given to an individual for a major local role in any activity such as business, charity or the public sector. OBE stands for Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Pretty fancy!

Mr. Tinniswood is on a cross-country book tour sponsored by the English Speaking Union. Drawing on thousands of memoirs, unpublished letters and diaries, and the eye-witness testimonies of belted earls and bibulous butlers, historian Mr. Tinniswood brings the stately homes of England to life as never before, opening the door onto a world half-remembered, glamorous, shameful at times, and forever wrapped in myth.

Based on his latest book, The Long Weekend, Mr. Tinniswood’s lecture will explore the sheer variety of country house life: from King George V poring over his stamp collection at Sandringham to fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley collecting mistresses at ancestral homes across the nation, from Edward VIII entertaining Wallis Simpson at Fort Belvedere to the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim, whose wife became obsessed with her pet spaniels. Mr. Tinniswood reveals what it was really like to live and work in some of the most beautiful houses the world has ever seen during the last great golden age of the English country home. Henry's Majestic Introduces New Winter Cocktails

Alex Fletcher has just shaken up the cocktail menu at Henry's Majestic and you'll now find eleven new drinks perfectly suited for the winter season. "It can be difficult to create a fall menu, because Dallas tends to have mild winters. So I try to keep the flavors of the season that I remember from when I was young, and apply them in a way that is still bearable during a warmer climate,” said Alex Fletcher, Bread Winners, Inc. Corporate Beverage Director and Henry's Majestic lead mixologist. “As a city, I've noticed Dallas has become more adventurous and is starting to branch out into other flavors, such as squash and sweet potato which is fun to see - and taste!"

The new cocktail menu includes:

7th Annual Symphony of Chefs Kick Off Party

Last Thursday, I attended a kick-off event for the 7th Annual Symphony of Chefs benefiting KidLinks. I have never attended this event so I was excited to learn more about it and the work that KidLinks provides. The party was held at the estate of long-time supporters, Vinette and Mike Montgomery, who welcomed over 80 guests for a night celebrating what will surely be an evening of culinary composition. Event chairs Georgia & Marc Lyons and Bonnie & Nathan Shea greeted guests as they filled the Montgomery’s backyard, which overlooks the Dallas Country Club. Good Morning Texas Co-Host Jane McGarry served as emcee introducing Marc and Bonnie who shared personal stories of why KidLinks and the annual Symphony of Chefs event was so important. They also recognized Honorary Chairs, D’Andra Simmons-Lock and Jeremy Lock along with sponsors and partners for making the evening possible.

Fashion is wearable art, a form of self-expression like none other so it's no surprise that the city's style-setters recently flocked to First Sight Fashion Show & Luncheon chaired by Ellen and Don Winspear for a fabulous presentation by Versace at NorthPark Center. Honorary Chairs were Joyce and Harvey Mitchell, and Luncheon Chairs were Tiffany Divis, Kara Goss, and Rhonda Marcus. Approximately 230 guests filled the C. Hall (Rodelinda, Aida, Otello), Allen Charles Klein (La vida breve), and Nicolas Dvigubsky (Boris Godunov). Guests marveled at the creativity, detail, luscious fabrics, and adornments of the pieces enhanced by the beautiful set designed by Larry Leathers. On November 4, Fashion Industry Gallery was the setting for an evening of glitz and high-glamour when the industry elite of Dallas fashion gathered to pay homage to those who have put – and continue to keep – Dallas on the world fashion scene. Fashion Group International of Dallas (FGI Dallas) hosted their annual Night of Stars gala and honored a select few for high achievements in art, fashion, jewelry design, and interior design. This year the gala co-chairs were Rachel Roberts and Britt Harless. Chuck Steelman was honored for the 3 years he served as Regional Director. Incoming Regional Director, Ken Weber, will lead FGI of Dallas beginning in 2017. Models posed in the garden wearing the Monique Lhuillier Spring 2017 collection. Dallas native, actor, and former fashion model, Greg Vaughn, emceed the event.

Coppell Actor Matthew McCann Has A "Plan" For Hollywood

Golden Globe Award winner and former Friends star, Matt LeBlanc, stars in the new CBS comedy “Man With a Plan” and one of his pretend children might look familiar to Dallas viewers... Cutie pie Matthew McCann plays ‘Teddy,’ the mischievous middle child of ‘Adam’ (Matt LeBlanc) and ‘Andi’ (Liza Snyder) in the comedy that shows what happens when a dad takes on additional parenting responsibilities when his wife returns to work after being a stay-at-home mom for 13 years. Born and raised in Coppell, Matthew began acting at the age of 7 when he followed in his brother’s footsteps and began taking classes at Cathryn Sullivan’s Acting For Film.

Spooktacular Halloween Sightings

When I was little, Christmas was always my favorite holiday. A mountain of candy vs. a mountain of presents? There was really no contest. But as I've gotten old... I mean older... I have come to appreciate the fun and festive nature of Halloween. Apparently, I am not alone because many of Dallas' famous faces donned alternate personalities and persona's over the Halloween weekend. Here are a few of my favorites:

Casting Call: Family Feud

Steve Harvey hosts Family Feud

Since its premiere in 1976, Family Feud has remained one of television’s most popular and enduring game shows. I grew up watching Richard Dawson host the show and long before Jeopardy, it was the Q&A show to test your knowledge of pop culture. The show pits two families against each other to compete for cash and cars by trying to guess the most popular answers to questions posed to 100 people surveyed. The answers/guesses can be unexpected and hilarious! As host, Steve Harvey engages competing family members in hilarious repartee, and his honest reactions to their responses have brought a fresh sense of comedy to the show. Family Feud will be traveling to Dallas on December 3 and 4 to hold auditions. To pre-qualify, you must EMAIL the shows producers. Interested parties will be contacted for the December auditions. So what does to make the cut? First off, you must have 5 family members related by blood, marriage or legal adoption to make up a team. Your email should include pictures and video showing them your family's personality. Briefly introduce yourselves, tell them where you are from, and feel free to use props, costumes, play a mock round of the game, or anything to stand out! Send your email to Dallas@familytryouts.com.

They represent a diverse group of interests, backgrounds and professions and are committed to raising awareness and critical funds for Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas. Enterhealth Hosts Mariel Hemingway To Promote Mental Health Awareness

Enterhealth Hosts Mariel Hemingway
Photos c/o Rob Wythe, Gittings

To raise awareness about addiction and how it affects the entire family, Enterhealth – a science-based drug and alcohol addiction treatment company based in Dallas – recently hosted an intimate evening event with Mariel Hemingway, an Academy Award-nominated actress and the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway. She and her famous family faced many struggles due to addiction, suicide and mental health issues, which she discusses in her newly published book “Out Came the Sun.” A fervent advocate for mental health, Hemingway spoke about overcoming the legacy of mental illness, addiction and suicide in the family during this special event.

Enterhealth feels it is important to understand how addiction impacts the family and that the entire family needs treatment, not just the addict. Addiction alters the brain chemistry of the addict as well as the family members, leading to a host of conditions including depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, insomnia and substance abuse. Family involvement and treatment are critical components of long-term alcohol and drug addiction rehabilitation. “Addiction significantly impacts and alters the dynamics within a family,” said Enterhealth Chief Medical Strategist Harold Urschel, M.D., M.M.A., author of the New York Times bestseller “Healing the Addicted Brain.” “When drug and alcohol addiction injures the brain, that person is struggling with a brain disease. As a result, the rest of the family has to adapt to the new chaotic and damaging lifestyle. To learn more about the services provided by Enterhealth, visit www.enterhealth.com.

Bread Winners and Quarter Bar Embark On Uptown Renovation

Patio lovers rejoice! If you drove past Bread Winners Café & Bakery and the Quarter Bar this past weekend and wondered what the heck was going on with the barricade fencing, I am happy to report that the concepts have just embarked on a comprehensive patio renovation (because who doesn't want to be outside whenever possible!?) How Do You #PictureDallas?

Dallas voters will go to the polls on May 6, 2017, to decide on the proposed bond program to fund critical infrastructure improvements across the city. These projects may include: City Facilities, Court Facilities, Cultural Arts Facilities, Flood Protection and Storm Drainage, Library Facilities, Park and Recreation Facilities, Public Safety Facilities, and  Street and Transportation. In the coming months, there will be many opportunities to share with city leadership how the program will directly impact Dallas and create a new picture of our city. A social media campaign has been created to give residents a fun and easy way to voice your opinion and tell city officials how you picture Dallas? How will the bond program change your picture of Dallas — where you live, where you work, and where you play? In addition to the traditional outreach and town hall meetings, they want you to use Facebook and Twitter to share your thoughts about the bond program. Use the hashtag #PictureDallas to:

  • Post pictures of yourself in your favorite places around the city for a chance to be featured
  • Tell them where you picture the bond program having the biggest impact on you and your family
  • Ask questions about the bond program
  • Share the bond program with your friends and community

Start thinking about what you how Dallas can be a better city and then post to let your city officials know how you #PictureDallas!

Dallas Zoo's Baby Elephant Is Ready To Meet His Public

Earlier this year, the Dallas Zoo and two partners successfully completed a rescue mission to relocate 17 elephants from drought-stricken Swaziland, Africa, to new homes in the U.S. Five of those elephants ended up taking permanent residence at the Dallas Zoo. It was quickly discovered that one of the four females, Mlilo, was pregnant and in May she delivered a calf that was named Ajabu. “This birth validates the critical importance of our rescue efforts and why we worked so hard to get these animals to safety... I shudder to think what would have happened to Mlilo and her calf if this move hadn’t occurred, and without the last six months of food and water we provided while they were in Swaziland, plus the excellent care and nutrition they have received upon their arrival.” said Gregg Hudson, Dallas Zoo president and CEO. After his birth, Dallas Zoo officials allowed several months for the calf and mother to bond privately while staff worked to “baby-proof” every area the baby would inhabit, including two barns, behind-the-scenes yards, and the lower portion of the Giants of the Savanna habitat. Portions of the habitat, which includes 12-foot-deep ponds and gaps that needed to be closed off, were safeguarded for the well-being of the little fellow. A shallow portion of the pond remains for the water-loving calf to enjoy. And as he grows, he will be given access to deeper parts of the pond.

Discover Personalized Skincare With Kiehl's Apothecary Preparations

Kiehl's Apothecary Preparations
Photos c/o Danielle Sabol

My grandfather was a doctor in small West Texas town. One of my prized possessions is his old medical bag full of potions and powders and medical equipment from the 1950s. I've always had a fascination with the scientific aspect of medicine. So, I was excited to receive an invitation from Kiehl’s to be one of the first to experience their new Apothecary Preparations - a truly personalized skincare featuring potent concentrates that address an individual’s unique skin concerns. The personalized, in-store-only service launched nationwide in select Kiehl’s stores this October. This new innovation is amongst the first in the skincare industry to bring bespoke skincare to the masses. This industry achievement is comprised of Kiehl’s Skin Strengthening Concentrate, plus two, individually selected Targeted Complexes. These pharmaceutical meets herbal concentrates feature a blend of advanced ingredients and are specifically selected for each customer’s skin. Through an elevated consultation and diagnosis, customers are able to craft a personalized formula based on their two most significant skin concerns. Options include: redness, wrinkles, rough texture, large pores and dullness. Once the Targeted Complexes have been selected and the consultation is complete, the Apothecary Preparation’s components are enclosed in a personalized box for the customer, who then mixes them at home prior to first application. The result is a highly potent, tailor-made skincare treatment.

So, how does it work?

Dr. Stephanie Setliff, TEP’s board president, shared some details about the work The Elisa Project is doing in the community through advocacy, education and support, which touches the lives of more than 31,000 individuals suffering from eating disorders each year. Meet the cast of Little Women: Dallas

Dallas is known world-wide for many things: big hair, big personalities, big banks accounts among them. Lifetime is seeking to prove that big things come in small packages with Little Women: Dallas. The show will follow the lives of Bri Barlup, Emily Fernandez, Asta Young, Amanda Loy, Tiffany Chance and Caylea Woodbury as they take on new adventures, friendships, fights and (of course!) all the drama. When Bri Barlup and Emily Fernandez move from Atlanta to Texas after dealing with some hard times, they are ready to shake things up with a whole group of new little ladies who prove that although everything is not always "bigger" in Texas, the drama certainly is!

The Trains At NorthPark Get Personal(ized)

One of my favorite holiday traditions is visiting The Trains at NorthPark presented by Bank of Texas and benefitting Ronald McDonald House Dallas. This year's display will feature cityscapes, including Dallas, replete with the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and Fair Park; New York with Times Square and Grand Central Terminal; Washington, D.C. with The White House; and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Other highlights include New England’s fall foliage, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and Route 66. Thomas the Train and his friends also draw families to the charming exhibit, which will honor Dallas Police with a special tribute this year. This year, you can make your mark - and support a great cause - by purchasing a personalized railroad car to be a part of the display. Railcars range in price from $175 for a standard railcar to $275 for the 2016 limited edition observation car, third in a series of limited edition passenger cars. Cabooses are available for $225, and engines for $325. Purchase by October 14 to be a part of the opening of the elaborate miniature toy trains exhibit on November 19.

Cookie Johnson Brings Her Brand of Magic To Dallas With New Book

Cookie Johnson Dallas Book Signing
Photos c/o Jai Carol & Co.

Cookie Johnson and Pat Smith have much in common: they are both married to high-profile athletes (Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Emmitt Smith respectively), they are both deeply connected to their Christianity, they are both Mothers who dote on their children and as of this year... they are both book authors. Cookie and Magic hosted a book party in Los Angeles for Pat earlier this year when she was on tour for her debut tome Second Chances, so when Cookie's book Believing in Magic was recently released Pat couldn't wait to return the favor. In her new memoir, Cookie shares details of her marriage, motherhood, faith, and how an HIV diagnosis twenty-five years ago changed the course of their lives forever. On November 7, 1991, basketball icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson stunned the world with the news that he was HIV-positive. For the millions who watched, his announcement became a pivotal moment not only for the nation, but his family and wife. Twenty-five years later, Cookie Johnson shares her story and the emotional journey that started on that day—from life as a pregnant and joyous newlywed to one filled with the fear that her husband would die, she and her baby would be infected with the virus, and their family would be shunned. Believing in Magic is the story of her marriage to Earvin nearly four decades of loving each other, losing their way, and eventually finding a path they never imagined. November 7, 2016 will mark a quarter-century since the announcement and Cookie is now finally ready to share her full account of the reasons that she stayed and her life with Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Lifetime To Launch Little Women: Dallas in November

Pictured: Little Women: Atlanta cast. Emily Fernandez and Brianna Lyn (pictured far right) will relocate to Texas star in Little Women: Dallas airing 2017

Little Women has been a smash hit for Lifetime. If you've never seen the show, it's basically Real Housewives - but with little people. Each franchise centers around a group of Little Women and their struggles to find love, maintain friendships and chronicles their daily life. The show originated in Los Angels, then spun off to New York, Atlanta and now... look for a Dallas series to air in November 2016! On Sept. 23, ET broke the news that Little Women: Atlanta cast members Emily Fernandez and Brianna Lyn will relocate from the Atlanta franchise to star in the Dallas series. That's not so crazy considering that the ladies are actually Texas natives who moved from Texas to Atlanta to be part of the Little Women: Atlanta cast last season. Filming began months ago with sightings at The Quarter Bar in Dallas and at Fossil Rim Lodge near Glen Rose. Yesterday, Lifetime released a video teaser for the new series featuring the cast dressed as saloon girls in the Old West. Some Texas stereotypes will never die... So, outside of Emily and Bri who are the other ladies? Do you recognize any of them?

Little Women: Dallas will be the fourth spinoff of the original show, Little Women: LA, after the Atlanta show, Little Women: Terra's Little Family, and Little Women: NY. Have you spotted them filming around town? Let me know! Send me pics! Message me scoop!

Lantern Fest Is A Celebration Of The Spirit

Historically, Chinese Lanterns have symbolized good fortune, requested favorable weather, and celebrated the lives of loved ones. In 2014, The Lantern Fest translated this ancient tradition into a family-friendly festival with food, music, s’mores, and children’s entertainment. When the sun goes down, lanterns paint the sky in a spectacular release. This family-friendly event will bring its celebration of light to Texas Motorplex in Ennis on November 19th as thousands of Chinese Lanterns, decorated with hopes and dreams, are released. “This event is for everyone,” said Lantern Fest co-owner John Malfatto. “People come for different reasons. Some families attend to remember a loved one, others search for strength during hard times and there are always a few who just want to snap a few shots for Instagram.” Gates open in the afternoon and participants can enjoy a stage show, live music, s’mores, face painting, inflatables, food and photos with princesses prior to the lantern release. Lantern Passes are now available for purchase online at www.thelanternfest.com.

(Press Release) Before Binzario Couture debuted its Spring/Summer 2017 collection, “Daydream” at New York Fashion Week last month at the Affinia Hotel, Manhattan, they let local fans get a first look at Fashion X Dallas. A few days later, their NYC appearance drew a crowd nearly three times larger than expected. The room was full of fashion enthusiasts, celebrity stylists, celebrities, including D. "The Fitzgerald Ballroom was turned into a designer runway and as Binzario's first model took her place at the head of the runway, the crowd was mesmerized," said a representative from Benzario Couture. "The stillness of the room was evident as everyone seemingly held their breathe so as not to allow anything from interfering with their ability to take in the extraordinary detail and beauty of each of the 20 pieces."

Rich Emberlin To Star In Live Police Drama on A&E Networks

Rich Emberlin in May 2016 | Photo by Jeremy Lock

Today it was officially announced that the Real Housewives of Dallas' hottest husband, Rich Emberlin, will join the cast of a new LIVE documentary series on A&E called “Live PD.”  Maybe I'm biased, but I'm a sucker for a silver-haired pirate, plus he's a dear friend and I couldn't be more thrilled to FINALLY be able to share this news! A&E said in a statement, "As the debate over the policing of America continues to be a part of the daily conversation across the nation, A&E will offer viewers unfettered and unfiltered live access inside the country’s busiest police forces and the communities they patrol in the new documentary series “Live PD.” Over the course of eight weeks, dash cams along with fixed rig and handheld cameras, will capture the work of a varied mix of urban and rural police forces around the country on a typical Friday night. In-studio host, ABC’s Dan Abrams, alongside Dallas Police Department Detectives Rich Emberlin and Kevin Jackson will guide viewers through the night giving insight to what audiences are seeing in real time, bouncing minute-by-minute between the featured police departments and offering an inside look at each live incident. Journalist Dan Abrams brings over 20 years of reporting and anchoring to the table and currently serves as the Chief Legal Analyst for ABC News. Detectives Kevin Jackson and Rich Emberlin have been partners for over two decades, having worked together in Patrol, SWAT, Criminal Intelligence, and Dignitary Protection Squad for Dallas PD."

Dallas Zoo To Do Celebrates Silver Safari

Dallas Zoo To Do

One of my many happy places around Dallas is the Dallas Zoo. I love being outside and communing with nature, plus there are amazing animals to look at and learn about! So, I always love attending the Zoo's annual fundraiser called Zoo To Do. This year marked their 25th Anniversary and the "Silver Safari" was celebrated in jungle chic style this past Saturday evening. My dates for the evening were WFAA's Good Morning Texas co-hosts Jane McGarry and Alanna Sarabia. Guests strolled through the award-winning Giants of the Savanna exhibit taking in the sights of elephants and giraffes roaming the Savanna and chetahs and lions lounging about as we bid on a vast array of silent auction items. I spotted Don and Barbara Daske (who was this year's Auction Chair), Kent and Tracy Rathbun, Chris and Rachel Trowbridge, Steve and Anne Stodghill song those taking in the sights (and smells). Attendees grazed exquisite dishes from over twenty-five of Dallas’ premier chefs and restaurants and enjoyed interactive animal demonstrations and musical entertainment. One of my favorite parts of this event is getting to get up close and personal with some of the Zoo's residents. This year I got to hold a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (proof in the above photo gallery), feed a giraffe, pet an African Hedgehog, and hold a boa constrictor. So cool. Following dinner, guests moved to the Wilds of Africa plaza for a live auction featuring rare Zoo experiences, travel, and more. The evening culminated with dancing and live music from Party Machine. Event Chairs Hal Brierley, Don Glendenning, and John Levy and Honorary Chair Mary McDermott Cook deserve a round of applause for executing an amazing celebration (and raising a ton of money). www.dallaszoo.com

Texas Health presents Women, Health & Balanced Living with Pat Smith

Texas Health presents Women, Health & Balanced Living Event
photos c/o Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery

On September 22, Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery hosted Women, Health & Balanced Living, a women’s health event at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano. The event featured kicked off a cocktail hour in which guests enjoyed sips, bites and networking. Yasmeen Tadia was on-site making a specialty drink comprised of Sugaire organic cotton candy and champagne (or Pellegrino) toped with edible gold fairy dust. It was magical and super tasty! The organic, all-natural, gluten free, vegan, kosher treat was a big hit with the ladies in the room. I was delighted to be able to interview my dear friend, Pat Smith, for the crowd and talk about her new book, Second Chances. Leslie Baker and Larry Robertson of Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery surprised Pat with not only a donation to her charity, Treasure You, but a pledge to gift her next women retreat with a supply of sleep shirts for attendees. In typical Pat Smith-fashion, this news was met with a gleeful shriek, big hugs and happy tears from Pat. Pat is always open and frank about turbulent her past and how hard she works to maintain her fairy-tale happy ending with husband, NFL legend and Dancing With The Star champion, Emmitt Smith.  After our chat came to a reluctant end, guests attended two rounds of breakout sessions featuring women’s health topics such as healthy eating and meditation for stress reduction. Guests left feeling uplifted and empowered about their physical, mental and spiritual health. I was honored to be a part of such an amazing night!

Fashion Designer Partners with Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind

One of the things I love most about Dallas is how we blend our entrepreneurial drive with our dedication to giving back to the Dallas community. A perfect example came across my desk this week announcing that acclaimed Dallas designer Tish Cox has signed an agreement with Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind to dedicate a segment of their blind and vision impaired workforce to the production of her chic fashion designs in what is believed to be the only enterprise between a fashion house and blind and visually impaired nonprofit organization of its kind. With Cox’s production facility unable to keep pace with the increasing demand for her clothing line, the pressure to emulate most large fashion labels and take production out of the country became a reluctant consideration. “Having my line made here is very important to me,” Cox says. “Every piece I have produced has a label with ‘Made in Dallas, Texas’ printed on it." In May of this year, a most unexpected introduction was made and Cox’s line, and by her own admission, her life, will never be the same. After visiting Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind, the designer was inspired to consider bringing her production to the qualified hands of blind artisans.  Cox, struggling to get the words out, says “The relationship we have with Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind is so very special. To think that my clothing line will afford the Dallas Lighthouse opportunities to serve more of the vision impaired in North Texas is really the big news here and I am compelled to do this. I am so privileged and humbled to have this incredible opportunity.” Don't you love a win/win?!

SPCA Fur Ball 2016
Photos c/o Thomas Garza Photography

The SPCA of Texas' Fur Ball 2016, “Shedding Light on Their Future,” was held on Saturday, September 24 at the Omni Dallas hotel. The elegantly futuristic, totally sold out, black-tie evening included dinner, dancing and live and silent auctions for 1,200 guests. Guests were greeted with passed bubbly and savory hors d’oeuvres as they made their way up to the Omni’s Dallas Ballroom. During cocktail hour, elegantly clad ladies and gentlemen walked the purple carpet and chatted with M.C. and Real Housewives of Dallas star LeeAnne Locken and America’s Sassiest Lifestyle Guru Steve Kemble about everything from what they were wearing to why supporting the animals is so important. A three-piece combo from Limelight jazzed it up and a whole passel of puppies from the SPCA of Texas’ iFoster program (all spayed and neutered!) romped and played as they were cooed over and petted by the glittering guests. Competition was fierce at the over 300-item silent auction, which featured everything from sports memorabilia, fabulous spa packages, high-end jewelry, dining experiences (from the fun to the fine) and so much more.

Reese Witherspoon Debuts Draper James At Highland Park Village

Reese Witherspoon and Cynthia Smoot
Draper James - September 28, 2016
In the video below, Reese Witherspoon introduces the world to Draper James by saying, “Pretty please: it’s not just a way to get what you want. It’s a lifestyle.... You only get one life, so let's make it pretty...please." The brand’s mission is “to bring contemporary, yet timeless Southern style to your wardrobe and your home, no matter where you live.”

Although clearly, Witherspoon knows where her customers reside because her first retail location was launched in Nashville in October 2015 and she recently opened her second in Dallas inside tony Highland Park Village. Named after her grandparents, Draper James celebrates what Witherspoon sees as a renaissance in Southern style, featuring playful dresses, tops with bejeweled collars alongside candles, engraved julep cups and embroidered linens.

In October 2015, Witherspoon told Garden and Gun magazine, "Every Southern woman I meet is always so pulled together. I’m just saying you don’t see a Southern woman standing in the airport in sweatpants. (Clearly she hasn't flown commercial in a while...) You just don’t. Even when they are stressed and their kids are swarming around their legs, they do things with grace. It’s how we were raised. We all have those lessons of what your mother or grandma told you was “appropriate” or “attractive.” That idea is quintessentially Southern... Women in the South do “unapologetically pretty.” It isn’t edgy. Or urban. It just makes you feel ready to take on the world."
