Monica Greene to sell personal art collection for Paws Cause

Hat Heaven by Frank X. Tolbert

Monica Greene defines the term Renaissance Woman: part poet, part chef, part animal lover, part philosopher she is a creative soul who pours her heart into her projects. The only things she loves more then food and cooking is her beloved animals. Green recently made the decision to part with 12 pieces of her extensive art collection to raise funds for Paws Cause to support the spay/neuter efforts of the SPCA. You can bid on these one-of-a-kind objects d'art on Thursday, May 15 from 6:30-8:30pm at 3015 Trinity Groves.

8.0 Round Table
Alan Peppard of the Dallas Morning News wrote of the occasion "A tangible memory of Dallas’ debauched ’80s is about to be auctioned at the May 15 Art4Paws fund-raiser at Trinity Groves. One rather unique item is called 8.0 Round Table (pictured left. click to enlarge the image).

Back in the late ’80s, Greene was manger of the 8.0 restaurant and bar in the Quadrangle. The auction item is actually an 8.0 tablecloth that artists Dan Rizzie and James Sasso decided to embellish over dinner, drinks and who knows what else. Reached at his home in Sag Harbor, N.Y., Rizzie had a hazy recollection of the night at the 8.0. “The markers we used were non-toxic,” he says. “I wish I could say the same about me. That night, we were feeling no pain.”

I remember a night at a bar in Exposition Park when Jimmy Sasso spent hours drawing all up and down my legs with a Sharpie... but, that's another story.

3015 Trinity Groves is located at 3015 Gulden Street, Dallas, TX. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Jody Dean of KVIL and Melissa Poe Carson from Big Rich Texas were in attendance and working the crowd to drive up the bidding price on their artwork. I was in love with a couple of darling superhero pillows made by TV personality Hilary Kennedy (see photo below), but alas I was outbid!

The Olsen twins debut The Row Fall 2014 at Neiman Marcus

Ashley Olsen with Cynthia Smoot
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen made an appearance at Neiman Marcus at NorthPark Center on Monday, April 28 to preview their Fall 2014 collection for The Row.

As I was preparing for this event, I couldn't help but notice that neither of the girls has any sort of social media presence. It's interesting that they are already so famous that they have no interest in using social media to sustain their celebrity.  In fact, it was made quite clear up front that they were in town for the opportunity to work with clients. There would be no interviews.

But I did need to make conversation, so when the opportunity presented itself for me to get a minute or two with Mary-Kate I said to her, "I can't help but notice that a lot of your line is made up of heavy wools and leather. When you are designing, do you think about the different regions and how your garments will translate to the South?". She looked at me like I had two heads and sassily replied, "Our customer travels." Well, okaaaaay then.  For the rest of the time I was there, every time a model would walk by in a garment, she'd say to me with a smirk, "Hey, Cynthia, you see that? It's cotton." "Did you see that shift dress? It's silk? You can wear that here, right?" I might have irritated her with my question, but I can guarantee that she is leaving Dallas knowing my name.  Score one for Oh So!

No Tie Dinner & Dessert Party 2014 was a Sweet Success

Leeane Locken, Christopher Wright, Steve Kemble, Melissa Samei, Tama Tran

The ninth annual No Tie Dinner & Dessert Party at the Frontiers of Flight Museum on Saturday, April 12, themed “La Dolce Vita,” sang of sweetness, fantasy and glamour with Fellini-inspired costumed models, 20 dessert stations, and a grand finale of guests dancing The Wobble to the tunes of Mark Ridlen (aka Mr. Rid). With approximately 2,000 dessert fans, No Tie is the largest fundraiser for AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD). Guests enjoyed complimentary cocktails including the signature Adult Italian Soda made with Reyka Vodka, while nibbling on a diverse array of desserts, such as Hillstone’s key lime pie, profiteroles from Café Gourmet on the Go, and Dallas Affaires’s glittery cake balls. Two levels of floors displayed over 400 auction items, from hand-blown vases and jewelry to original art pieces and a two-day Ferrari car rental from Platinum Motorcars. The beautiful husband and wife duo, Rob and Deanna Cahill, masterminded an exhilarating dance performance captured by “paparazzi” that ended too quickly.

Don Neubaeur, David Nelson
A high-profile cast led the team: Co-Chairs David Nelson and Dennis Kershner and Honorary Chair LeeAnne Locken. Patricia Deason received the Sheila Dolezal Humanitarian Award for her volunteerism and continual support throughout the years. Other sociables in attendance included ASD President Don Maison, Tricia Sims, David Finn, former state District Judge Susan Hawk, 2013 Honorary Chair Steve Kemble, and Benny Black.

Don Neubauer and business partner Les Siter of Siter-Neubauer & Associates, an executive recruiting and management firm, were in attendance and were applauded for their corporate’s in-kind service that successfully recruited over 70 dinner hosts this year.

Mad Hatters was Skittles Rainbow of Floral Fun

Celebrating its 26th year, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Serenade to Style fashion show and luncheon included a champagne reception, a fashion presentation showcasing collections from Lela Rose, Diane von Furstenberg and Escada and a seated luncheon. This year there were 6 awards to be handed out: Over the Rainbow: Most Colorfully Flamboyant, My Favorite Things: Chic Couture, The Yellow Rose of Texas: Most Elegant, Edelweiss: A Vintage Look, Tip Toe Through the Tulips: Most Whimsical, Do Re Mi: Most Creative use of Natural Materials, Best of Show. Criteria: Integrity of Design and Creative Use of Botanical. As you can see from the photos in this post, these ladies are serious about the themes and about W-I-N-N-I-N-G. In years past, the judges cast votes in all the categories. This year, each judge was assigned one category. In theory, this was a grand idea to simplify the process for the judges. The only problem, was that no one at the event knew which judge had each of the categories. This created mass pandemonium as contenders tried to figure out who they needed to get in front of to be seen and considered for their category.

NOTE TO THE COUNCIL: Next year have each judge seated at a table with a sign so that ladies can line up at their intended destination and everyone feels like they have been seen. Much more efficient to have the ladies parade past the judges that to have the judges try to navigate the crowd and see everyone. Just my two cents. Take it or leave it...

Cynthia Smoot, Steve Kemble
The weather couldn't have been lovelier and everyone in attendance was in a sunny mood as we sipped champs and snapped away on our iPhones.  I'm pretty sure we almost overloaded Instagram.

Everyone was a-buzz because Steve Kemble was missing. But, wait! There he was - over in the corner with a milk carton on his head. Oh, that crazy Steve. You just cannot outdo him, no matter how hard you try. And try indeed, did LeeAnne Locken who dazzled in a custom chapeau created by Andre Yabin at Binzario Couture that took up two seats at the fashion show in and of itself. She was a rainbow of color (see below)!

There was practically a stampede to get a photo of Jill Rowlett who won the Best of Show award for her "It's Not Easy Being Green" Kermit the Frog ensemble. Not only was her hat amazing, but she was dressed in head to toe green silk and had a darling Judith Lieber Kermit clutch. Perfection! I always love Jill because you just never know what crazy, over-the-top thing she will show up in. Two years ago, she showed up with a 3-tiered working fountain on her head... I'm telling you people, these ladies are SERIOUS about this competition!

UCR Retail as Art Exhibition selects winners for 2014

Ashley Holman, Oryon Fisher, Elena Reboredo, Kayleen Escobar

Dallas-area high school students were recently encouraged to submit their best photographic interpretations of the “Retail as Art” theme in UCR's annual Retail as Art photography contest. The 2014 photography invitational attracted over 93 student participants from 21 schools across the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. The participants contributed more than 300 photo and Instagram submissions. The positive energy was contagious as students, teachers and families gathered at 129 Leslie on April 9th to mingle with real estate executives and socialites at the student exhibition and celebration, which culminated in a presentation of $11,000 in scholarships for 12 deserving participants. “For many of the participating students, the Retail as Art Exhibition offers the first opportunity to showcase their photography in a public setting,” said Mickey Ashmore, UCR CEO. “We hope this competition broadens the students’ world view and inspires them to further explore their creative talents.”

The exhibit included 75 notable submissions by students, bites from Bolsa Mercado, wine by Custom Wine Source, beer by Heineken, photography by Travis Lilley, valet by Sewell Automotive Companies, flowers by Whole Foods and Central Market and music by DJ Blake Ward. A panel of influential Dallas journalists, photographers, taste-makers and designers judged the entries based on originality, creativity, photo quality and how well the photo communicated the theme, “Retail as Art.” Judges included: Evans Caglage of Dallas Morning News, Wade Griffith of Wade Griffith Photography, Lisa Petty, DFW Style Daily, Bernard Underwood with An Intimate Place / B.U. Designs, Teresa Gubbins with CultureMap Dallas, Sam Reitmayer-Sano with SWOON, the studio.

Cameron Silver has "Decades" of work in vintage fashion

Cameron Silver has "Decades" of work in vintage fashion
by Dawn Mellon

At first glance, the fashionable men and women gathered at the NYLO Hotel's South Side location looked much like any other group of stylish 'see and be seen' party goers out on the town last Thursday night. But, upon closer inspection, it soon became clear that the tall, sandy-haired gentleman clad in silk camouflage Valentino pajamas with embroidered black slippers was, indeed, the reason for the gathering. Named one of Time magazine's "25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion" in 2002, Cameron Silver is the founder and co-owner of Decades, the renowned vintage and haute consignment retailer in Los Angeles, and author of a book by the same name, an oversized, visually stunning exploration of a century of fashion. The former co-star of Bravo TV's Dukes of Melrose briefly addressed the group to share his incredible knowledge of vintage fashion before sitting down to sign copies of his latest book and chat with fans.

Monograms for Mother's Day

Maybe it's the Southern girl in me, but I am monogram obsessed. Any gift is 10x better when you add the personalized touch of a monogram. From initials on a shirt pocket, to your last name on a keychain to your moniker on a necklace. I love a monogram. As Mothers Day approaches, here are a few things I would love to receive (hint, hint) and maybe something your Mom would too! Whatever you do, just don't wait until the last minute because personalized products do tend to take a few more weeks to process due to the customization. Like Reese Witherspoon says, "My rule is, if it's not moving... monogram it!"

Reality Rewind: Project Runway's Shirin Askari

It's no secret that I am reality TV obsessed.  Reality programming has replaced old-school soap operas as our favorite guilty pleasure and Dallas is the playground of choice for producers hunting for characters to appear in new shows.

DALLAS is the most well-known television show to put our fair city on the world-wide map and although its not a reality show, it set the stage for our image and we've been playing up to it ever since.  It's no secret that Texans (Dallasites in particular) have BIG personalities. That stereotype of big hair and big bank accounts exists for a reason.

Every show in production today has come through town looking for unique, interesting and engaging personalities to help launch their concept into the reality stratosphere.

But what happens to these people when the hot lights of reality fame starts to fade away? For some, it's a welcome relief that they can go back to their normal life. For others, the free clothing and baubles, VIP seating, adoring fans, primo tables at their favorite restaurants and media coverage is an addiction they don't want to give up and will do anything to stay in the spotlight.  Like a bad perfume, I can smell their desperation like animals can smell fear. I thought it would interesting to revisit some of Dallas' reality stars and see where they are now. Who used their 5 minutes of fame to launch themselves into something greater, who quietly slipped back into anonymity and who is still working the system looking for another chance to get back onto the boob tube.

Let's start with Project Runway's Shirin Askari.

PowerTalk 21: Talk to your kids about underage drinking on April 21

April is National Alcohol Awareness month, and on April 8th, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) North Texas invited me to attend a breakfast meeting at Bread Winners Cafe to talk about their campaign, "PowerTalk 21", a national day encouraging parents to speak with their teens about underage drinking and why it’s important to wait until 21 to drink.

As the Mother of a 13-year old, this topic definitely resonates with me and I was eager to attend and devour any information or tips they had to give about how to converse with your teen on this subject.

The Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence® program has two major parts: (1) A website for parents that includes information and tips based on the best available research, along with access to a free parent handbook and (2) Free parent workshops to equip parents with strategies for having these potentially life-saving conversations.

Nationwide Insurance agent Tamika Raymond spoke on behalf of MADD as the national sponsor of Power of Parents and PowerTalk 21. She talked about her own experience with drinking and driving as a professional basketball player and then as a college basketball coach. And about the trauma her office has to deal with when they receive calls from customers affected by underage drinking-related car collisions. Most powerful was the testimony of Gwen Edwards, who lost her 22-year-old son in an underage drinking related car crash. Edwards shared her own story about the influence of parents and consequences of underage drinking. Her story shed light on the tragic effects of underage drinking and why the conversation with teens about alcohol can’t wait.

The connection between Jesus and the Easter Bunny

See's Candies Surprise Basket
Easter is the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and held between March 21 and April 25, on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the northern spring equinox.

See's Candies recently sent me some darling Easter treats for my son that got me to thinking...  There's no story in the Bible about a long-eared, cotton-tailed creature known as the Easter Bunny. Nor is there a passage about children painting eggs or hunting for baskets overflowing with scrumptious Easter goodies. And real rabbits certainly don't lay eggs. So, how did these iconic symbols of Easter come into being??

Apparently, bunnies, eggs, Easter gifts and fluffy, yellow chicks in gardening hats all stem from our pagan roots. Specifically to the 13th-century, pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses.  An article I discovered at Discovery News explains that the Teutonic deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox. Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate. Spring also symbolized new life and rebirth; eggs were an ancient symbol of fertility.

Did Courtney Loves Dallas get the axe?

Bravo TV released their roster of new and returning shows today and sadly, it appears that Courtney Loves Dallas will not be returning to their schedule.

Bravo Ratings predicted the cancelation back on January 24, 2014 saying, "it’s almost certain that there won’t be a sophomore season for Courtney Kerr. (Kerr's) eighth episode saw its ratings fall from the seventh (which had fallen from the sixth) to 610,000 viewers of which 392,000 aged 18-49 – Demo 0.30. Given that Most Eligible Dallas was cancelled by Bravo Media after just one season, it seems very safe to assume that Courtney Kerr’s spin-off will be also."

Attempts to reach Kerr for a comment were unsuccessful. But, not to fret. You can still catch Kerr every Monday through Friday giving her opinions on KTXD's The Broadcast or dishing out fashion inspiration on her blog, What Courtney Wore.

Dallas Summer Musicals presents EVITA on April 15-27

Don't cry for me Argentina.... The truth is I never left you...

Is it bad that I will never be able to hear this song without seeing Madonna's performance in my mind? I actually think it's some of her best work. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award®-winning musical returns at last when EVITA hits the stage April 15-27 at Music Hall at Fair Park.

Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world — while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. EVITA tells Eva's passionate and unforgettable true story, and features some of theater's most beautiful songs, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored." Don't miss the stunning new production of EVITA, directed by Michael Grandage and choreographed by Rob Ashford.

Tickets available at http://www.dallassummermusicals.org/shows_evita.shtm
Content Warning: Ages 9 and Up
Run Time: 2 hours 15 minutes (including intermission)

American Blogger explores the phenomena of blogging

American Blogger is the debut film from Dallas-based photographer Christopher Wiegand.

"What started this whole film idea for me was how (my wife) Casey loves to blog/instagram so much and she is always meeting new people and, in most cases, really (sincerely) connecting with people around the country (and world). I was really more interested to dig deeper into all this blogging/instagram/twittter world and one, help people understand how cool it is to have an area on the internet that is all yours. And two, I hope to sort-of take a visual snapshot of this time in history when all these instagrammers/bloggers are able to put something out there into the world and really shape culture (in a positive way)."

I love everything about the concept of this film - except the fact that I wasn't asked to be in it. Really, Chris? I've been blogging since 2007 and I live a mile from you!!! So wrong. Just. So. Wrong...

"Entertaining and educational, this film will leave you feeling inspired. It will open your eyes to a thriving movement. The potential could change the world..." says the voice on the trailer. American Blogger will be available to purchase in early June 2014 exclusively on iTunes.

Dallas Market Center celebrates the 10th Anniversary of FashionCenterDallas

Shirin Askari of Askari
Founded in 1957, Dallas Market Center (DMC) is the world’s most complete wholesale marketplace. Within its marketplace of more than five million square feet, retailers from around the globe source products ranging from home furnishings, gifts, decorative accessories and lighting to textiles, fashion accessories and men's, western, women's and children's apparel.

Every year more than 75,000 buyers visit DMC and place orders with their exhibitors. They represent small specialty stores and major retailers. DMC supports them by showcasing the most complete and highest quality exhibitors from start-ups to legendary names.

I recently teamed up with DMC to celebrate the 10th anniversary of FashionCenterDallas, which is Dallas Market Center’s complete apparel marketplace of more than 575 showrooms and yearly 1,000 temporary booths, merchandised in easy-to-shop neighborhoods.

I helped curate the list of local fashion bloggers and social influencers which included Cathy Williamson for The Middle Page, Heather Anderson for Style by Fluent, Leah Frazier for DFW Style Daily, Samantha Stewart for Style of Sam, and Hilary Kennedy among others.

At the showroom of Brad Hughes we got a preview of what Catharine Maladrino, Finley, and Layfayette 148 are offering for Fall. Next up, the D2 Drysdale Showroom where we viewed the latest trends in denim from Free People and Miss Me. At Indigo, we ran into one of my favorite local designers, Shirin Askari showing her new collection for Askari.

My favorite stop was The Ritz Group mainly because owner Brad Ritz was so charming and passionate about the lines he showed us. His showroom was amazing and we saw a wide variety of beautiful lines including Alice & Trixie, Trace Reese, and Alexander McQueen. Our afternoon ended with a champagne toast and a runway show showcasing the hottest in Fall trends from DMC. Sitting next to Women's Wear Daily writer, Holly Haber, confirmed this was an afternoon well spent in my continuing fashion education.

Invitation Clarity: Wording is Everything

Dear event chairs, party planners and PR gurus,

Allow me to get on my soapbox for a minute. I am seeing a disturbing trend in invitation verbiage that needs to be halted - immediately. Last week, I received an invitation to a grand opening for a new store. The invitation clearly read "lunch will be served".  Upon arrival, I waved off a couple of server's with passed trays, not wanting to fill up on appetizers before we ate. An hour into the event, I figured out that the passed hor d'oeuvres were the lunch. I went through Whataburger on the way home.  Today, it happened again. I was invited to a "private brunch" at a new store. Again, I waved off server's walking round with passed trays. The store didn't appear large enough to hold a luncheon, so I asked the manager with whom I was chatting, "Where is the brunch being held?" and was informed that the servers were "passing brunch bites for our convenience". So, this wasn't a brunch. It was a shopping party with hor d'oeuvres.

Rio Ritz brings Brazilian chic to West Village

If Thais Moses looks familiar, it might be because you've seen her on Bravo's Courtney Loves Dallas as one of Courtney Kerr's no-nonsense besties. Looking to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight, Moses plans to be known as the go-to girl for approachable and fashionable styles on a budget, backed by her ability as a talented buyer.  Her effortless style will be made available to the public with the opening of her new boutique, Rio Ritz located in Uptown on Saturday, April 5 (1pm).

Thais Moses
Moses likes to say she was “made in America, born in Brazil”  and with this new store she is bringing sought after fashion accessories and apparel, already available online, to the consumer directly. Rio Ritz plans to stand apart with its exclusive styles and offer a trendy yet refreshing line of products.

The inspiration behind the name ‘Rio Ritz’ stems from Thais’ home country of Brazil, where she gained invaluable exposure to the fashion and textile industries at an early age through her family’s business.

“As a young mom of three children under age three, it’s hard for me to ever find anything inexpensive that I feel great in, so I just divert back to the old t-shirt and heels. I want to make a point of delivering quality, stylish and affordable items in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere,” Moses says of her store. Rio Ritz also differentiates itself by carrying a limited supply of hand-made accessories and apparel in support of local and international small businesswomen.  Rio Ritz offers competitive pricing, with most items ranging from $25 - $75.

Rio Ritz Boutique is located at 2722 Routh Street, Dallas, TX 75201, (469) 458-3570. www.rioritz.com

Accessible Luxury benefiting Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children to be held on April 11, 2014

Accessible Luxury is an annual event benefiting The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) that is an evening comprised of fashion, food, jewelry and cars.  I am honored to partner with them as a blog sponsor for this year's fundraiser and was invited over to the hospital last week to learn more about what they do at the hospital. Although I've driven by the building a thousand times, I had no idea the number of miracles that occur there every day! TSRHC is a world leader in the treatment of pediatric orthopedic conditions. Since 1921, TSRHC has treated children with orthopedic conditions, such as scoliosis, clubfoot, hand disorders, hip disorders and limb length differences, as well as certain related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. Admission is open to children from birth up to 18 years of age. TSRHC, the only Scottish Rite hospital in the world, is not affiliated with the Shriners Hospitals for Children. I love that they will treat any patient - regardless of the family's ability to pay.

House of DIFFA 2014 Masquerade (in pictures)

It's hard to put into words the fabulosity that is DIFFA. The mission of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) is to raise funds and grant those funds to organizations which fight HIV/AIDS by providing preventative education programs targeted to populations at risk of infection, treatment and direct care services for people living with/impacted by HIV/AIDS and that support public policy initiatives which add resources to private sector funds. Known for it's over-the-top fun and fund-raising abilities, their annual black-tie gala makes this event one of THE hottest tickets in town every year. DIFFA chairman of the board Brittanie Buchanan Oleniczak, event chair Jim DiMarino and honorary chair Simona Beal led this year's efforts and instigated a couple of BIG changes. First off was a venue move from the Hilton Anatole to the Omni. The second was to give the gala a theme of "Masquerade" which inspired guests to add venetian masks to their already glittering ensemble. Instead of me describing the eye candy, I thought I'd just let you see it for yourself... Enjoy the show!

Tim Gunn touts the merits of Nespresso at NorthPark Center

Tim Gunn and OSC's Cynthia Smoot enjoy a chat and a cup of Nespresso coffee

There are a lot of mornings where I have to "make it work". I find it difficult to be upbeat before 10am, which is why a delicious cup of coffee is an integral part of my morning routine.  Nespresso is known as the crème de la crème of coffee brands and they have recently opened up shop at NorthPark Center in the luxury wing across from BCBG MazAzria. Don't even think about a grab-and-go situation here because Nespresso does not offer such a service. They believe that you should savor your coffee, so to-go service is not an option in their stores. You need to sit - no, lounge - in their cafe and enjoy your cup of Nespresso coffee.

Win $100 Gift Card to The Children's Place Just in time for Easter

My little man has outgrown The Children's Place for clothing and accessories, but I have dressed him in many a cute outfit from here over the past 13 years. If you have little girls, your choices are endless for adorable frocks. Got a boy? Typically, your usual option is to head to the back of the store to that one rounder full of sports Tees and dinosaur prints.

Thank goodness that The Children's Place has heard the prayers of millions of boy-Moms and created collections that are fashionable as well as functional! I also love that their girl clothes are sweet and fun and are not just smaller versions of adult clothing that can sometimes be too sexy or revealing for my tastes.

The Children's Place at Galleria Dallas location invited me in last week to check out their latest offerings for Spring and I think that parents will be pleased with the fun colors, great styles and affordable prices found throughout the store. The best part? They gave me $100 gift card and I am passing on the savings to one lucky reader!  This contest runs April 1-8. The more times you tweet and post - the more entires you get. Good luck!

You can find The Children's Place at Park Lane Place, Galleria Dallas, Irving Mall and Town East Mall to name a few central locations. Visit http://www.childrensplace.com/ for more details.
