The Best Charity Events in Dallas

2014 is right around the corner. I feel like I can't look ahead without also taking a moment to reflect back. It's like crossing the street: look left, right and then left again… As we approach the end of yet another fast and furious year, there are a handful of festivals, events and galas that resinate as standout events to me.  Before I even start this post, let me just throw out a disclaimer. When I say these are the "best" charity events in Dallas, I am not talking about the most worthy charitable endeavors. Every non-profit organization has great intentions towards an admirable cause. But let's face it, there is only so much time and money one can give. At the end of the day people are looking for an event that not only provides them with a way to give back to a cause or their community but also provides a great experience, delicious food, great people-watching and an amazing experience that still has you talking about months later.  The following events are listed in no particular order, and all are number one in my book. These functions were so well executed this year that they raise the bar for every chair person who comes behind them. Bless their hearts…

Arts Spotlight: Porgy and Bess

History, Romance, and Controversy at the Winspear: The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess
by Jayne Herring

The story of Porgy and Bess is a beautiful and sad story of love, abuse, drugs, poverty, sex, and community. The history of the musical “Porgy and Bess” is just as fascinating and tumultuous. Written by a white Jewish composer in 1935, Porgy was originally a full-length opera infusing blues and spirituals originating in the African-American community (never done before, as of yet not done since), and “Arguably the most important piece of American music written in the 20th century” (NYTimes 2012). And lucky us, the National tour of the latest revival is playing at the Winspear Opera House through December 22nd.

This production, winner of the 2012 Tony for Best Revival, is much less operatic and abrasive than the original, more digestible to our PC sensibilities and modern ears perhaps. There are many critics who passionately disagree with the changes, but that’s nothing new for controversial Porgy. When it was written in the 1930’s, when it was still common for black characters to be portrayed by white actors in blackface, Porgy daringly and progressively featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers, giving many a launching pad for successful careers.

Duck Dynasty opens Duck and Dressing

Beth & Darius Rucker with Rebecca, Bella, Sadie, Korie & Willie Robertson

You know how I always say, "It's not so much what you know as WHO you know…" Example: On Saturday I got a call about attending the grand opening for a new boutique called Duck & Dressing that recently opened in Monroe, Louisiana. You might of heard of the owner - Korie Robertson? She's on a little show called Duck Dynasty.  Yeah.  Took me about 30 seconds to accept the invitation, clear my schedule and gas up the car. I hit the road and 4 hours later was taking a tour of the Duck Commander Warehouse. (Don't tell Jase, but in spite of the big sign he had up, I totally sat in his chair and touched his duck calls.) Normally, I wouldn't talk about a store opening in Monroe, Louisianna. But when you get a personal invitation from America's most popular family to come to a private party for the opening of their new boutique… Well, I just had to bend the rules to share the experience!

photo: Duck & Dressing on Facebook
Until a couple of years ago, hardly anyone had heard of West Monroe, Louisiana. It was just another dip in the road on the way to somewhere more important - until one family put this town on the map: The Robertson family.

Their megahit television show, Duck Dynasty on A&E, thrust this redneck family into a very public spotlight.  The 70s had the Brady Bunch, the 80s had the Cosby's, the 2000s - have the Robertson clan.

The men of the family might be known for their scruffy appearance and camo attire, but the ladies are style-savvy and in the past few months have decided to break out of the redneck stereotype and express their love of clothing through a variety of fashionable projects.

Willie and Korie Robertson's 16-year old daughter, Sadie, walked in New York's Fashion Week this past September and debuted her own line of prom dresses in collaboration with Evening by Sherri Hill.  Within weeks of Sadie's New York debut, Korie tweeted that she was opening a clothing boutique called Duck & Dresssing with her 25-year old foster daughter Rebecca in Monroe, LA.  The store opened in November and last night I attended the holiday/grand opening party.

True Food Kitchen: Healthy Food That Tastes Unhealthy

According to their website, you don’t have to be a die-hard Yogi to dine at True Food Kitchen (TFK). You need only a desire to give your body nutrients, and your palate something memorable. The basis for Dr. Andrew Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet isn’t meant to deprive a healthy body of great flavors, it’s meant to take popular trends in cuisine and pair them with healthy living.   "Try the kale and quinoa," they say, "you’ll live longer. Drink the seabuckthorn and acai, you’ll feel better."

I'm sorry… sea buck what?

Panange Curry with Chicken  |  Wild Mushroom Pizza and Revolver Blood and Honey beer  |  Albacore Tataki

Okay, now that the commercial is over, let's cut to the chase. Yeah, this place is chock full of things that are healthy and organic but for Taco Bell-loving fools like me, this place will also win you over with their bright energetic decor, spacious bar chock full of craft beers and fresh juices and yummy cuisine.  I was invited over for a sneak peek at TFK a few days before it opened.  My husband and I had a lunch date there and started our meal with the Albacore Tataki, which was fresh and light with a zing to it. I got spicy with the Panang Curry with Chicken, which was hot and hearty. A great choice for this time of year. My husband loved the Wild Mushroom pizza he ordered but what he loved more was the variety of craft beers available for consumption.

My only beef with TFK is that it's pricey. Lunch entrees range from $13-$20.  Dinner ranges from $13-$26. The prices make this a concept I will visit occasionally and not frequently but I did like the ambiance, vibe and food. Overall, this is a healthy joint that prepares food that tastes unhealthy - and I like that.  TFK is a welcome addition to the Park Cities dining scene and I have no doubt they will become a neighborhood hangout for many.

True Food Kitchen is located at The Plaza at Preston Center,  8383 Preston Center Plaza Drive,  Dallas, Texas 75225, 214.377.3333. http://www.foxrc.com/restaurants/true-food-kitchen/

Give a Gift That Gives Back This Holiday Season with Singing Anyway

Singing Anyway is a new book composed of true stories written by the families of children with pediatric cancer. This tome chronicles seven inspiring, and sometimes heartbreaking, true accounts of children fighting cancer with courage and optimism when it is least expected.

One hundred percent of the author's proceeds will be donated to support pediatric cancer research.

"The purpose of this book is simple," says author Lizzie Cochran, "to tell the stories of seven children who have fought or continue to fight cancer. Their stories are told through the words of those fighting with them – their friends and family members. These children have endured more in their years than most of us will in a lifetime.

They are heroes in the truest sense of the word. I wish that this book could do justice to their bravery, but I know it cannot. Neither can this book take away their pain or fight their battles for them. It cannot give back their childhoods. What it can do is tell their stories and, through their stories, play a role in preventing other children from having to endure the effects of cancer. Only by finding a cure will we be able to give these children the kind of childhood they desire and the kind of future they deserve."

Lizzie Cochran
She goes on to say, "The only way we can begin to offer a normal childhood to children fighting cancer is to actively pursue the research of new approaches to the treatment of pediatric cancer. With more funding and wider awareness, we can create the real possibility of more effective and less toxic treatment protocols for children diagnosed with cancer. We can put more children into remission and, perhaps one day, even achieve that magic word: cure."

Singing Anyway is available on Amazon for $12.98 or FREE on Kindle until December 17. Cochran's Christmas wish is for those who download a free copy to please return the favor and leave a review to help boost the titles visibility on Amazon so that more people will become aware of her cause.  All proceeds from this book will be used to fund pediatric cancer research though Miracle Players Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Dallas Dweller: Paulette Martsolf

Dallas is full of colorful characters. There are those you see monthly in the society pages, whose stories are legendary in this town. But, this feature is inspired by the people that I think you should know more about because of their fabulous style, interesting back-story or amazing accomplishments.  Dallas Dweller seeks to introduce you to these fabulous faces.  If you look at magazines and blogs, you might think that anyone over the age of 35 isn't relevant when it comes to fashion. Paulette Martsolf is a designer who is rocking it for those of us who aren't ready to throw in towel quite yet.

Paulette Martsolf

Paulette Martsolf's story began in St. John’s, Newfoundland where she was born and raised. She began a design career at the Sheridan College in Toronto and left there to study at the Paris Fashion Institute in France giving her the opportunity to experience the French culture. As her love of fashion intensified, she was eager to create a line and her first venture was a line of pajamas that she sold through home parties.

In Newfoundland many small children hear the words alley-coosh as the sun begins to set which translates “off to bed.” The named seemed appropriate, since this is how her career began…. sending women off to bed in luxurious sleepwear.

She met her husband on an airplane and married him in under 6 months and it was his career brought her to Texas. She garnered experience through industry jobs and then felt ready to take the plunge back into the design world. 20 years later Martsolf says, "I am a fulfilled person who lives my dream each day I walk through the Snider Plaza boutique doors. (The business) has grown way beyond my wildest expectations and I can’t wait to work on the latest new Allie-Coosh project! I am always adding something to the collection and I thrive on change!"

Dallas Celebrities Share Their Favorite Holiday Traditions

If you said the word "holidays" to a group of 200 people, I can guarantee you that 200 different visual reactions would occur within the minds of those being asked. Some of us grew up with lots of traditions and rituals, while others did not. This time of year is magical and wonderful and part of that reason is that everyone celebrates it differently! I asked some of my favorite Dallas celebrities and media pals to share what their favorite holiday traditions were. I hope you enjoy reading their answers as much I as did. Happy holidays!!

"Every Xmas eve since I was a little boy my family has celebrated the Feast of the Seven Fishes*. Now that I have Spoon we celebrate that family tradition in the restaurant.  The next morning I drive out to my wife's family's ranch and open presents with the kids and roast a couple of prime ribs and celebrate! "

- John Tesar, Owner and Executive Chef of Spoon Bar & Kitchen and former Top Chef contestant

*The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian-American Christmas celebration. Today, it is a feast that typically consists of seven different seafood dishes. This celebration commemorates the wait, the Vigilia di Natale, for the midnight birth of the baby Jesus.

"My favorite part of the season is reminiscing about the look on the faces of children as they gaze upon Santa. I spent two years helping Santa in Kerens, Texas. I actually dressed up as Santa and drew holiday shoppers to town.

Many children posed in front of me for picture taking. It wasn't possible for them to sit on my lap but I remember the look in their eyes. Now that I'm Big Tex, I rest during the holidays but I still enjoy seeing children gaze up at a 55-ft. cowboy in amazement during the State Fair of Texas each year."

- Big Tex, State Fair of Texas spokesperson and Texas icon

Be Bohemian Like Me says Thais Schmidt

In November of this year, Thais Schmidt started an online shopping boutique called Bohemian Like Me with the desire to translate her passion of traveling into her love for fashion.

Schmidt was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, moved to North Carolina at the age of five, and ended up in Dallas by the age of six. She later lived in South Korea for three years, and had the opportunity to backpack through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macao, and India.  For someone who looks about 25, this chick has covered a lot of territory!

She loved seeing the bright colors, meeting amazing locals, and the freedom she felt while traveling abroad. "I want others to feel the bohemian free spirit that I felt while exploring these amazing countries," say Schmidt.  "I hope Bohemian Like Me encourages women to be their rocking, care free, adventurous, bohemian selves. Even if we can't get away as much as we'd like, we can surely look good and feel good living."

The website is in its "early stages" so while inventory is limited - what's there will be appealing to her audience.  Shoppers can find a limited assortment of Maxi Dresses, Fringed Cardigans, patterned leggings, kimono wraps and more at http://bohemianlikeme.com/

Great Gifts for Moms...

There's not a Mom on the planet that doesn't love to brag on her children. I am so proud of my son that I could just burst every time I look at his sweet face. So, in my humble Mom opinion, the best gift you can give a Mom is something that captures the sweetness of her children or gives her a taking point to tell total strangers about how amazing they are. Below are some fun ideas:

Kincaid can take a family photo and turn it into a unique piece of art painted in oil, pastels or watercolor. Paintings start at $75 for a 5x7 watercolor and can be as big as 36x48 for an oil painting. Visit http://bit.ly/1bqkAyO.

Great Gifts for Foodies...

Cookwell & Company* is an Austin-based company, but one of their owners lives in Dallas so I am counting this one because how can you not love BACON!? I've used this stuff on burgers, in meatloaf, slathered over cream cheese as a dip… it's uses are endlessly delicious.

The website states, "This ain't your grandma's jam. It's not for spreading on scones at tea parties. No, this is grandpa's jam. Packed full of one of the greatest foods on earth...bacon. So while grandma is filling jars with fruity goodness, grandpa is slathering his bacon jam on juicy burgers, potatoes and roasted veggies. With a little bit of sweet and tangy, this hearty bacon jam...is better than good!"

Meet Courtney Kerr's BFF: Tori Gonzales

Tori Gonzales
Photo Mat Wulff
Did you catch the premiere episode of Courtney Loves Dallas on Bravo? If you did, you are probably already wanting to know more about Courtney Kerr's BFF, Tori Gonzales.

This spicy tamale is not only incredibly beautiful, she is down to earth and calls it like she sees it with little filter (you'll see proof of that in later episodes…).

Gonzales recently launched a jewelry company with her sis, Desiree Cox called All The Wire. She hasn't quit her day job - yet - but if sales are any indication, it won't be long before this budding designer is rocking the accessory world, one story at a time.

Allow me introduce you to my friend and reluctant Bravolebrity, Tori Gonzales:

OSC:  How did you meet Courtney Kerr? How long have you been friends?

TG:  We were introduced by a mutual friend who kept telling us our personalities would click and our humor was similar. So naturally we HAD to meet. We agreed... hit it off and here we are today. If only dating were that easy.

Great Gifts for Men...

Whether you need to restock your bar after all those holiday parties or too much family time has you reaching for the bottle, this season try T-X Blended Whiskey.

The handcrafted whiskey from Ft. Worth based Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. was named “Best American Craft Whiskey” in addition to earning a Double Gold Medal at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, one of the world’s most highly regarded spirits competitions.

T-X is a premium pour with notes of vanilla, caramel, and honey butter. The bottle toppers are a work of art, too. They're handmade at the distillery using a variety of luxury cowboy boot leathers. For the holidays they have released a limited edition bottle which is topped with a santa hat.

This is the perfect gift for any man in your life, your boss or someone who lives out-of-town you want to share a taste of Texas with.

T-X Blended Whiskey, which retails for around $35 for the 750 ml., is available in a growing number of liquor stores and on-premise locations throughout Texas.

Courtney Kerr Loves Dallas. And Fashion. And other Local Fare. (Part 2)

Yesterday, I published Part One of an in-depth interview (well, I don't know how deep it was…) with Courtney Kerr. We talked about her (non)relationship with Matt Nordgren, the development of her Bravo spinoff Courtney Loves Dallas and what it is about Big D that makes her toes curl.  Today, she weighs in on her social media addiction, her Mom's battle with cancer and her dreams for the future.

Kerr with OSC Editor, Cynthia Smoot
OSC: On Twitter you seem to only respond to the people who are mean to you. Why do you give them your energy?

CK: Because I want people to know that bad behavior isn’t tolerated. I thank people all the time for nice compliments, but I will RT people or respond to mean comments because a) I want people to see that, I know what you’re doing and b) that’s just weird and rude. It’s just not acceptable to talk that way to someone you don’t even know. When did it become socially acceptable to be mean to strangers? When did it become socially acceptable to be mean to people you know for that matter? Spend your time talking about things you like.

OSC: Tell me how your role as co-host on KTXD’s The Broadcast came about?

CK: I was friends with some people who were involved in putting this project together and they came to me and said, ‘You should audition for this.’ And I said, ‘I’m not a broadcaster. I have a lot of opinions but I’ve never used a teleprompter.’ But I went in and auditioned and I really liked the forum. It's an open discussion where we sit around and talk about our opinions on a variety of topics. It’s been a great platform for me to meet new people and develop my skills as a personality and a host.

For the kiddos on your list...

me&re design* recently touted the benefits of a soft blankey on their website stating, "Studies show that a security blanket provides both comfort and a secure feeling to a child. Their attachment with the blanket provides a stable feeling in a potentially unstable environment. Security blankets prove especially helpful in new situations in which the child longs for something familiar. Life is stressful and filled with challenges and uncertainly, so it’s no wonder that even as adults, we still love snuggling up with a soft blanket for comfort. The good news? Research indicates that no long-term harmful effects occur from a child having a security blanket. Whew!"

me&re design offers polar tec fleece blankets in a wide variety of colors and designs to appeal to children, teens and adults. Y'all, these are seriously the SOFTEST blankets I have ever felt in my life. Available in 3 sizes, you can personalize it with your family name or personal monogram and you’ve got a great gift that will provide a lifetime of pleasure.

Courtney Kerr Loves Dallas. And Fashion. And Other Local Fare. (Part 1)

I first met Courtney Kerr when she was in the midst of filming Most Eligible Dallas for Bravo TV in early 2011. Drew Ginsburg, a fellow cast mate, had reached out to me early on in the show’s development and we had established a friendly text banter. It was Ginsburg who took it upon himself to make sure the rest of the cast knew who I was and thus friendships developed between myself and most members of the cast that lasted throughout filming and into the show’s run. I took an instant liking to Kerr, who from the very beginning was the standout personality on that cast. Even though I am 15 years older than Kerr, we quickly bonded over our love of fashion, food and a good glass of wine. Mainly food. I love a girl who loves to eat and our outings always include a delicious meal and a cocktail.

You’ve heard people talk about how you have to have the “it factor” to make it in Hollywood. Well, Kerr has “it” in spades. From her big hair to her big mouth to her larger than life personality, you either love her or hate her. And she is just fine with that. Apparently Bravo executives also saw something special in Kerr and it wasn’t too long after MED had wrapped that they began to talk to her about a spinoff. Kerr was both excited and terrified. In an earlier interview dated August 12, 2012, she told me, “I am so humbled that Bravo would choose to develop a show around me. It's thrilling, but frightening at the same time. In an ensemble cast, if something isn't working you can say 'Oh, maybe they didn't like the chemistry between this person and that person. Or maybe a certain storyline wasn't working'. But for my new show, there is nowhere to hide. It's all eyes on me and that is extremely intimidating!"

Fashion Stars For A Cause are announced for 2014 Inaugural Event

Yvonne Crum

Philanthropist Yvonne Crum is leading the fight for suicide prevention in our community with the launch of a new event called Fashion Stars For A Cause.  (If this concept sounds vaguely familiar it's because this event is the reincarnation of the gala previously known as Fresh Faces of Fashion.)

After the death of her oldest son, Yvonne Crum sought a way to bring attention and understanding to the usually taboo subject of suicide. Through the Suicide and Crisis Center Fresh Faces of Fashion program, she paired the unlikely topics of suicide and fashion together and created an annual event in partnership with Modern Luxury, Stanley Korshak and Park Place Motorcars that has raised more than $1 million in its first five years.

Earlier this year, Modern Luxury decided to take Fresh Faces in another direction, so Crum chose to take her vision, freshen it up, and has partnered with Beverly Drive Magazine to create Fashion Stars for a Cause.

She explains, "Fashion Stars For A Cause will be an annual event with seated dinner and fashion-themed with a big focus on the cause of suicide prevention and how it has an impact in the community. One of the big changes (from fresh Faces of Fashion) is that we will be having small luncheon get togethers with the Fashion Stars, inviting guests that want to hear more about the cause and tour the center."  There will also be a gala dinner at Dallas Country Club on March 21, 2014.

Trains at Northpark Provide a Home Away from Home

The author's daughter takes in the magic of the Trains at NorthPark Center

Trains at Northpark Provide a Home Away from Home
by Jayne Chobot Herring

My grandfather had a toy train set that was put out every year around Christmas. It must have taken hours; it took up the whole dining room. Regardless of age, toddlers through adults, watching the trains going in and out of the tunnels and around the little storefronts and homesteads provided hours of entertainment. It had been years since I’d experienced that when I took my 5-year old Inara to The Trains at Northpark this week.

It was fascinating to watch a little girl whose interests usually run to Barbie and American Girl release my hand and take off to see all of the trains running along the tracks. More specifically, twenty-six Lionel train sets rolling along approximately 1,600 feet of track, tucked into a retail space on the second level of NorthPark Center between Sephora and Free People. And with a ticket price of only $3 for children ($6 for adults; children under 2 are free), it’s the perfect afternoon diversion or break from holiday shopping.

FGI Night of Stars Shone Bright Like a Diamond in 2013

Last Friday, Dallas' fashion elite gathered at Dallas Market Hall for Fashion Group International Dallas (FGI Dallas) annual Fashion and Lifestyle Awards, ‘Night of Stars’ gala.

What I love about this event - outside of supporting FGI - is that it is the BEST event of the year for people-watching. Why, you ask?

Because in fashion, honey, they dress to impress. When you are dealing with the creme de la creme of the industry, I can assure you that they are going to pull out ALL the stops to make sure their look is flawless.

I was not disappointed. I have three words for you: Susie Straubmueller's Skirt. Those who were there know what I am talking about.

The event was chaired by Neimans Chuck Steelman and Katy Messersmith Mattox of Katydid Collection.  Courtney Kerr, emceed the awards ceremony and provided wise-cracking jokes at everyone's expense. She was hilarious and a fresh breath of air from the usually stuffy moderators.

OSC Arts Spotlight: Artist vs Architect 2013

Artist vs Architect 2013
by Jayne Herring

Artists, architects, and patrons filled the lobby gallery of One Arts Plaza last Thursday to raise money for Family Compass through healthy competition and creative collaboration. Shiny spot-lit Fiats stationed around the fountains welcomed guests as they arrived at the mixed-use high-rise in the Dallas Arts District, and cocktails sponsored by Veev were passed upon entering the elegant indoor space. The event itself raised over $10,000 for Family Compass, a passionate local non-profit whose mission is to build healthy families and a strong community by preventing child abuse and neglect.

Tre Wilcox Offers a Top Chef Experience to Dallas Diners

Buying a cooking class from Chef Tre Wilcox isn't giving someone a gift. It's giving them an experience.

In October of 2012 Wilcox hosted his first TRE Cooking Concepts course. (The acronym stands for Technique Recipe Execution). These classes were created to give discerning food lovers the opportunity to learn the importance of culinary techniques and execution from his very kitchen.

Limited to six seats per class, guests enjoy an intimate culinary experience straight from the personal kitchen of Wilcox - former Executive Chef of Village Marquee Grill and two-time alum of Bravo TV's Top Chef (Season 3 and 8).

I was recently invited to attend one of his classes and experience the magic of Wilcox for myself. When I confessed that I liked to drink and eat way more than I liked to cook, I got the famous Tre Wilcox laugh that's a combination of guffaw and hee haw. You literally cannot hear Wilcox laugh with laughing yourself. It's contagious. "Come on, girl. We'll have a good time," he said. And so we did.

Tre's custom cocktail for us consisted of cucumber vodka, basil & cucumber blend and Yuzi juice
