Discover Dallas' Best New Shopping Destination: Henderson Avenue

The Knox-Henderson district has been a popular destination for dining, nightlife and shopping for many years, but much like the relationship between Dallas and Fort Worth, Henderson has always been the less flashy side of the strip featuring mom-and-pop restaurants, bars and boutique shops that couldn't afford the pricer rents on the tonier Knox St. side of the highway. The difference is very clear: From Central Exp/Hwy 75, head west down Knox St. and you'll find offerings from such retail juggernauts as Kate Spade, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Steven Alan and Lululemon Athletica. Hungry? You can grab a bite at Chili's, Chuy's or one of Lombardi Concepts many venues.

Want a more relaxed and local feel? Cross east over Central Exp/Hwy. 75 to the Henderson Ave. side of the road and you'll find more unique mom-and-pop boutiques and independent dining establishments. The problem that Henderson Ave. faces is that it's a much longer stretch of road than Knox St. and changes from commercial to residential and then back to commercial again. This choppy divide makes it impossible to meander the entire stretch on foot, unlike Knox St.  But in the past couple of years, this caterpillar has turned into a beautiful butterfly and made valiant strides to step up its game. Their differences play off of each other giving the entire area something for everyone. If you haven't been down Henderson Ave in a while, let me tell you what you are missing. This is not a complete list of retail offerings, just a few highlights:

For the ladies...

Vintage Martini, 2923 N. Henderson Ave.

Since 2007, Ken Weber has been offering vintage and consignment shoppers the best in high-end designer offerings. How amazing is his stash? Good enough that shoppers have been driving to CARROLLTON for his wares! Well, no longer do fashionistas have to cross 635 to get their fix of vintage handbags, shoes, gowns and sportswear.

Vintage Martini has just relocated to 2923 N. Henderson (just across the road from Gypsy Wagon). You'll find over 2,000 square feet of amazing labels from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s... up to last year's fabulous trends. Merchandise is grouped by decade with more recent "fashion edge" frocks at the front. There's a Martini Man room for the gentlemen and if bling is more your thing, you'll fall in love with Erik Yang's collection of antique and couture baubles. http://www.vintagemartini.com

Gypsy Wagon, 2928 N. Henderson Ave.

When Carley Seale opened Gypsy Wagon a few years ago, she had no idea she was starting a cultural revolution. She just wanted a place to sell bohemian, country-chic goods. The Gypsy Wagon strives to carry gifts and home items that are handmade, that are produced with recycled or sustainable materials, and that are made by people and companies who care.

Owners, Johnny and Carley Seale, are an adorable married couple with two young sons who run the business as a team. D Magazine readers voted them Best Women's Boutique and Best Gift Store in 2012 and Fashion Group International of Dallas has recognized Gypsy Wagon with a Rising Star Award for Retail and I can't think of a better example of an independent retailer to represent Dallas. http://the-gypsy-wagon.com

Milk & Honey Boutique, 1906 N. Henderson Ave.

D Magazine says, "We get why Brittany York named her shop Milk & Honey. This is a promised land if we've ever seen one. You’ll fall in love with the shop’s decor when you walk in. It is a bit Anthropologie-esque, but York has her own thing going on, too. Patches of greenery decorate the walls, shabby chic furniture stores handbags, Archipelago beauty products, and jewelry, and chalkboard-painted dressing room doors let attendants organize fittings.

Get excited to flip over some price tags. You won't find more than a piece or two priced over $100. Find chunky knits, vests, blouses and dresses for work and play, and a fun collection of jewelry and shoes. Don't miss the sale room, which offers merchandise for as low as $18." http://www.milkandhoneyboutique.com

For the men...

Trunk Club, 3010 N. Henderson Ave.

Trunk Club is "a place that typically curates a bunch of dapper clothes (for men) and ships them to you via trunks. Hence the name." says Urban Daddy. "Anyway, they’ve set up an actual shop in a wood-and-brick warehouse on Henderson. (They also) serve drinks. There’s even in-house consultants who’ll help you comb through racks of Jack Spade shirts and J. Press jeans. Helpful when you’re preoccupied with whiskey."

Since my husband hates shopping, plying him with whiskey first seems like a smart sales tactic... http://www.trunkclub.com/

The largest online men’s clothing brand in the United States brought their fresh take on retail to Dallas last month with the launch of their Guideshop on Henderson Avenue. Bonobos Guideshop is an ecommerce showroom designed as Bonobos’ answer to the traditional retail experience.

The Bonobos Guideshop Dallas is a physical 1,200 square-foot space serving as a highly personal extension of Bonobos’ comprehensive customer service for those who want to see and try on the clothing in person before placing an order on the popular retail website. http://www.bonobos.com/

For everyone...

Warby Parker, 2008 N. Henderson Ave.

One of eyewear's trendiest brand has just opened a "Classroom" on Henderson Ave., establishing a permanent showroom space in Dallas for the first time.

According to Racked, "Previously available at trunk shows and during the New York-based brand's 2013 cross-country Class Trip, the "Classroom" line (glasses are under $100 with a prescription!) does most of its business online. Before now, the closest classroom you could visit was in, curiously, Oklahoma City. Open every day of the week, from 11 am-7 pm. https://www.warbyparker.com

All that shopping will work up an appetite, so if you need to re-energize check out Fireside Pies, The Porch, Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar, Mesero Miguel or Gemma.  Just want a cocktail? Hit up Gingerman, Barcadia or Capitol Pub. According to the Knox Henderson website, you should look for a new Knox Street development that will be completed in September of 2015 and will include apartments, shops and yes, even a Trader Joe’s. Black Forest Biergarten is under construction next to The Slip Inn and the soon-to-be Houndstooth Coffee. I am very excited by all of this new development and even happier to see that this growth has not taken away from the charm of the area - but has only added to it!

Dallas Dweller: Michelle Chase

Michelle Chase lets little ones experience the benefits of giving
by Alison Weinstein

Get on board! This is the basic philosophy that attorney Michelle Chase has imbibed on an honest crowd – kids. Whether it’s riding in a funky bus to deliver Meals on “Big Wheels” or wiping out graffiti for the City of Dallas, Chase’s Wee Volunteer organization has cut to the core of lifelong volunteerism by targeting children to get involved.  Wee Volunteer exists to provide age appropriate service projects for preschool and elementary school age children with local Dallas charitable organizations. The projects currently serve six areas of need: hunger, homelessness, under-privileged children, elderly, animals and the environment.

Becoming a Mother to two girls (Mae, age 7 and Mary Claire, age 5), inspired Chase to create Wee Volunteer out of a home office. “There is so much return in teaching children to give back early,” says Chase. Now, with 1,200 families mobilized in the Metroplex and over 30 community partners, Chase knows her cause has resonated. “Experiencing first hand the benefits of giving - is an everlasting gift. It’s a simple practice... Entrusted early, volunteerism naturally will become part of our fabric.” To date, there have been few opportunities for children to be on the front lines of giving back. Wee Volunteer does this beautifully by vetting experiences and identifying engaging opportunities for kids. Each month, Chase provides 15-20 projects to choose from.

Drag Brunch comes to Sambuca in Uptown

Gurl... you haven't brunched in this town until you have experienced Drag Brunch. Led by the incomparable Jenny P., Drag Brunch is a bawdy floor show that involves lots of lip-syncing, R-rated jokes, cute guys getting hit on and wide-eyed innocents getting lap dances - if you're lucky! The only problem with Drag Brunch is that it has been that it's only offered at DISH once a month. Hurrah for Sambuca for recognizing that these ladies cannot have their talent dimmed and diminished to just one day a month!  They have picked up this magnificent floor show and will be hosting Drag Brunch twice a month at their Uptown location.

Joining my darling Jenny P. for the July shows will be Krystal Summers, Asia O'hara and Raquel Blake.  Performers will rotate in and out from month to month. Dine from a savory menu including: Omelets, Eggs Benedict's, Steak and Eggs, Open-faced Chicken and Waffles, Huevos Rancheros, Turkey and Brie Sandwich, Roasted Salmon Filet and more! Drink specials will be flowing with $3 Mimosas, $ 3 Bloody Mary's and a $12 Bottomless Mimosas. Sambuca is now taking reservations for the next two shows, which will be on July 6th and July 20th. Shows will be held at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30 pm.

The Dallas Arboretum announces the finalists for Gardenlicious, a healthy kids cook-off contest. Local food celebrities will determine the final winners on Sunday, June 29 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alexander Camp House. Estée Lauder visits Dallas to celebrate their love affair with Neiman Marcus

Hundreds of style bloggers, fashion media and socialites turned out to celebrate a new in-store shop for Estée Lauder at Neiman Marcus NorthPark on Wednesday, June 18.

Leonard Lauder (Estée Lauder's son and Chairman Emeritus) brought his "traveling companion" international actress, model and brand ambassador Elizabeth Hurley to town just for the occasion. Lauder was just a delight and held the crowd rapt with the story about how his mother came to Dallas in 1950 to pitch her new line to Neiman Marcus.

Seems the cosmetics buyer foisted her off onto an assistant buyer. Undeterred by the snub, Estée marched the assistant buyer into the ladies room and gave her a facial and applied her make-up. "She emerged.. glamorous! And if you had seen her before, she was not so glamorous," chuckled Lauder. 64 years later, the love affair between the two companies is still strong.

Jim Gold, President and Chief Merchandising Officer of Neiman Marcus Group, presented some Texas-themed gifts to the esteemed visitors: Hurley received a bouquet of yellow roses and Lauder a cowboy hat which gleefully donned. Lauder proclaimed Dallas women to be amongst the most beautiful in the world. "Look to your left, look to your right and you'll see what I mean," he mused. Hey, he'll get no argument from me!

All The Wire Celebrates Their One-Year Anniversary

All the Wire celebrated its one-year anniversary with a stylish soiree at Gallerie Noir this week complete with a photo booth to capture the events of the evening and bites from Urban Taco. Invited guests included such stylish pals such as Courtney Kerr, Amy Havins, Thais Moses and Rogers Healy.

Founders (and sisters) Tori Gonzales and Desiree Cox dreamed up the concept for ATW based on their mutual love of "stamping stories" and the company name came from her sister's personal love story.

Traditionally, monogrammed products are sweet and preppy in style and come on chevron or plaid designs and in pastel colors. Not this line. These girls have created a cult following by designing edgy personalized jewelry pieces using handcuffs, shotguns, bullets, razor blades and mini-pocket knives.

All The Wire launched around the same time as Tori's stint on the Bravo TV show "Courtney Loves Dallas" and although the show centered around long-time BFF, Courtney Kerr,  it provided Tori a new-found visibility that has benefited ATW's launch. Both Kerr and Gonzales have smartly used their short-lived reality TV stint to their advantage. Others reality newbies should take a lesson.  ATW has some exciting collaborations in the works, so connect with them on Instagram or Facebook to stay in the loop about this exciting home-grown brand.

Taco Cabana to return Tango Frogs to Greenville Ave. on June 26

In the early 1980’s, nightclub legend Shannon Wynne opened The Tango Club at 1827 Lower Greenville Avenue. The club's calling card were six 10 foot-tall revolving frogs dancing and playing the guitar and the saxophone on the roof above it. The frogs were sculpted by Bob “Daddy-O” Wade—a Texas artist who had risen to fame by installing a 40-foot-long iguana sculpture atop the Lone Star Café in New York City. Unfortunately, the dancing amphibians spent only a short period of time as part of the East Dallas skyline. When Tango closed in 1985, the frolicking frogs were hauled off to a new home in the country, a place on Highway 35 just outside of Hillsboro, Texas known as Carl’s Corner.

Taco Cabana has recently purchased the three frogs that have been at the Carl’s Corner truck stop on I-35 all these years and are returning them to their original iconic status atop the Taco Canana location at 1827 Lower Greenville Avenue. “The troublemakers are coming back to Dallas,” a clearly delighted Daddy-O Wade told the DMN's Alan Peppard from his home in Austin. The amphibian sculptures are currently in Cleburne where muralist Stylle Read is giving them a loving restoration before they come home. “Now the three frogs have a great ending,” says Daddy-O. “They’re back where they started. You can’t write a story better than that.”

On June 26, Taco Cabana is hosting an ’80s-themed patio party called Throwback Thursday. The frogs will be placed by one of those Dallas BIG signs for photo ops with the guests. “We’ll actually have the frogs on the ground,” says Coerver. In the middle of the night, a crane will come in and hoist them on the roof. At 9 a.m. on June 27, Taco Cabana is hosting a media unveiling with Daddy-O in attendance.

So, where are the other three frogs? Living and playing the guitar, saxophone and morocco, on top of a Chuy’s Restaurant in Nashville, Tenn. Spit shined and looking good, Wade predicts that they are likely to live there happily ever after.

Gregg Asher is working hard to bring reality TV back to Dallas

Dallas has been in a reality TV slump lately. Two years ago, you couldn't round a corner without bumping into a film crew. But now... Big Rich Texas? Their network got sold and it died a sudden death. A-List Dallas on Logo? Not renewed. Courtney Loves Dallas. Fans didn't love it enough to bring her back. Texas Multi Mamas? Apparently motherhood isn't exciting enough for reality TV, even when you are parenting multiples. We can lay claim to the hot 'n hunky Richard Rawlins of Discovery's Fast 'N Loud and a few chefs who are still spotting the culinary competition shows... but I miss the days of the bawdy drama that these cat fights brought to my pages.

Enter Gregg Asher, who is making a valiant attempt to save the day. The fashionable set is all to familiar with Asher who is known about town for dressing in couture women's wear and 6" stilettos. The rest of the world met him in last year's Million Dollar Shoppers on Lifetime where he appeared as part of an ensemble cast about the world of luxury personal shoppers. Alas, the concept was not renewed after its inaugural season, but Asher appears to be hard at work to lay claim to a new series.  Once you've been in the red hot glare of the spotlight, it is mighty hard to let it go... According to his Instagram feed, he's currently in New York in "serious talks about my new project with Weinstein Company and Lifetime TV."  Let's wish him luck.

Discover Dallas landmarks with a new app called Pegasus Urban Trails

Ever see a cool building or landmark and want to know more about it? A new app called Pegasus Urban Trails is now available to help people uncover culturally-significant landmarks, discover little known treasures within the central business district of Dallas and to create pedestrian trails linking Dallas’ urban districts.

The Urban Armadillos organization was founded in 2012 by Mike Wyatt and Skyler Baty who enlisted a group of civic-minded professionals to aid them in their endeavor. The group was named Urban Armadillos and empowered to “Dig Up Dallas” district by district! From that small start the group has grown to over 300 professionals. The volunteer group selected Dallas’ unique landmarks, parks, architecturally-significant structures, and places with “pop culture” within each of the downtown districts.

The districts include Civic Center, Dallas Arts District, Deep Ellum, Dallas Farmers Market District, Main Street District, Reunion District, Thanksgiving Commercial Center, and West End Historic District. By connecting the districts, the Urban Armadillos goal is to preserve Dallas’ urban treasures, to enrich the experience of visitors to downtown Dallas, and to increase the overall economic vitality and legacy of our city.

In January 2013, the Urban Armadillos joined with Preservation Dallas with the goal to work together to finalize the trails and format the individual site information for use in brochures and a mobile app. The mobile app was recently completed and named Pegasus Urban Trails in honor of the “Pegasus” located on top of the historic 1922 Magnolia building in downtown Dallas. The easy to use mobile app lets users select trails they would like to follow by map or name. Sites can also be sorted by address, name or topic – including architecture, history, art, and pop-culture. The Pegasus Urban Trails mobile app is available for free on Google Play or the App Store on iTunes. The mobile app project has been funded in part by AT&T, Downtown Dallas, Inc., and the Fondren Preservation Fund for Texas of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Celebrate Independence Day 2014 at the Four Seasons Las Colinas

I am a big proponent of the "staycation" and the Independence Day holiday provides the perfect opportunity to pack up the family and enjoy a leisurely weekend of fun-in-the-sun time without having to go too far away from your own home.

I love this holiday because it's laid back, fun and offers the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with your friends and loved ones. I mean, is there anything more American than hot dogs and fireworks!?

This year, you'll find me at the Four Seasons Resort & Club in Las Colinas over Independence Day Weekend. I'll be taking over their social media accounts and guest posting for them all weekend, reporting on all of the explosive, wet-n-wild activities they have planned.

If you'd like to join my family for a great weekend, here's what you can expect to enjoy:

Chipotle Invites Dallas to Support Public Radio on June 11th

I've been a fan of independent radio since college. Those were the stations that would play the alternative 80s music that mainstream radio wouldn't and it was on these stations that I first discovered bands like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, Nemesis, and Depeche Mode. In the early 90's it was KDGE that showed support giving Dallas bands such as Course of Empire, Horton Heat, Deep Blue Something, Tripping Daisy, Sister 7 (as "Little Sister"), and Poi Dog Ponderingan early platform that launched them onto the national scene. KXT 97.1 has picked up the "alternative" mantle for this era and in support of the format, all DFW-area Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants will come together on Wednesday, June 11 to donate 50 percent of the day's proceeds (up to $10,000) to raise funds for public media from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.  To participate in the fundraiser, guests should visit http://kxt.org/2014/05/save-the-date-eat-at-chipotle-on-june-11-and-support-kxt/ to print and/or save the flyer above on your smartphone, then show it at checkout to ensure a percentage of that purchase goes to KXT 91.7. I'll be buying burritos to do my part to keep local bands and independent labels on the radio!

Esé Azénabor brings the drama with her 2014 couture collection

Esé Azénabor
Esé Azénabor will debut her 2014 collection of looks (44 in all) at a fashion show themed, Phantom of the Runway, on Friday, June 13th at the Fashion Industry Gallery (FIG). 100% of the proceeds from this event will go directly to Our Hearts Day Center.

Her name means (literally) "a gift I will tell you about later". On June 13th, later arrives and the world will learn about this talented couture designer.

Currently her amazing hand-beaded, feathered, lace creations are only available by appointment at her Dallas Market Center showroom. This new show will hopefully bring her to the attention of local buyers who will carry her line. You listening Stanley Korshak? Brian Bolke? Neiman Marus? Azenabor is a gem just waiting to be discovered.

Nigeria-born Azénabor grew up with her grandmother and mother beading with African prints. That cultural tradition has transcended into her designs by conceptualizing her fascination for heavy beading, crocheted lace, and embroidery. Inspired by a combination of vintage, African, Egyptian, and contemporary European influences, she merged cultures to create her luxurious, signature collection bearing her name.

Green Grocer Launches Chefs’ Choice Charity Program

Starting in June, Green Grocer will feature a new chef, menu item and juice each month with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Chefs’ charity of choice. Chef Brian C. Luscher of The Grape and Luscher’s Post Oak Red Hots is kicking off this new Chefs’ Choice Charity program.

Chef Brian has created a dry rubbed roast beef Panini with jalapeño cheese spread, grilled onions and red wine vinaigrette slaw to be showcased through June 30 ($7.49). $1 from each Panini sold will benefit The Stewpot, a service organization which provides meals to our homeless and at-risk neighbors and assists with medical needs, counseling, enrichment of children and youth, job training, and cultural expression.

Additionally, Green Grocer has created a juice inspired by Chef Luscher dubbed Raisin’ Hell ($7.49 for 16 oz), a blend of organic grapes, pineapple, cucumber mint and ginger with $1 from each juice sold also benefitting The Stewpot.
